Seeragam: The Digestion Spice of Suddha Sanmarkkam
Cumin Powder — Known scientifically as Cuminum cyminum and in the Siddha tradition as Seeragam or Jeeragam. This aromatic spice is a fundamental spice of Ramalinga Swamigal’s (Vallalar’s) Nithya Karma Vidhi, the 1867 spiritual manual that explains daily routines of physical purity and inner awakening. In the manuscript, cumin is a spice as well as a sattvic food It appears in three separate contexts in the Vidhi: in the Mookotu Chooranam formula, in the daily sattvic cooking and in the morning Thamboolam practice. No other single spice holds this breadth of prescription in Vallalar’s teaching. Grown through sustainable agriculture.
The Wisdom of Ramalinga Vallalar on Seeragam
In the Sanmarkkam tradition, the quality of our food is linked to the clarity of our consciousness. Vallalar taught that Sattvic food — pure, light, and non-violent — is essential for those walking the path of compassion (Jeeva Karunyam). Cumin, used “abundantly” (Athikamaga) as Vallalar prescribes, embodies this principle: warming without overheating, clarifying without stimulating, and activating all other herbs without dominating them. It is the carrier and harmonizer of the Sanmarkkam kitchen.
Seeragam is derived from the Tamil words “Seer” (making it healthy/well) and “Agam” (human body/inside). It signifies a substance that aids in digestion and promotes health.
