Sustainability

Care for the living world is not separate from our path. Here is how we try to tread lightly, and how you can help us do better.
Plant-Based by Principle
Everything we offer and share is plant-based, without exception: no meat, fish, dairy, eggs, or honey. This is first an act of compassion toward all living beings, at the heart of Vallalar’s Jeevakarunyam. It is also the single greatest thing any of us can do to lighten our burden on the earth, asking less land, less water, and fewer emissions of the world that feeds us. For us, the two are one movement, not two.
Organic and Ethical Sourcing
We strive to offer organic, plant-based food wherever it is within our reach, grown with as few chemicals as the land will allow, and to favour small and traditional growers whose methods honour the soil rather than exhaust it.
We look to the nutritional principles set out in Vallalar’s Nithya Karma Vidhi: food that is simple, pure, and living. What is good for the body and good for the earth turn out, again and again, to be the same food.
Eco-Conscious Packaging
We try to use recyclable, compostable, and minimal packaging, to avoid plastic wherever we can, and to reuse materials rather than buy them new. We would far rather a parcel arrive plainly wrapped than dressed in waste that outlives its purpose. This is an area we are actively working to improve.
Lighter Shipping, and a Digital First Choice
We want to be honest with you: sending physical products across the world carries a real cost to the earth, and we do not pretend otherwise. We try to reduce it by consolidating shipments, avoiding air freight where we can, and encouraging collection at local centres.
And because our texts and teachings are always free to read online, you can receive the whole of Vallalar’s message with almost no footprint at all. When there is a choice, we gently encourage the digital gift over the shipped one.
The Mindful Use of Technology
Technology can serve compassion, and it can also quietly consume a great deal of energy and water. We try to use it deliberately and sparingly. We reach for tools such as AI only where they genuinely widen access, for example to help translate the teachings or to give them a voice for those who cannot read them, and we prefer human hands and human hearts for the rest.
Our measure is simple: we would rather do a little, slowly and with care, than a great deal at a cost we have not counted.
Simplicity
Vallalar lived with radical simplicity, and simplicity is the quiet root of all sustainability. To want less, to waste less, to take only what truly serves life: this is at once a spiritual practice and the most honest environmentalism we know. Before we ask how to consume better, we try to ask whether we need to consume at all.
Help Us Do Better
We are a small association, and we are still learning. We will get things wrong. If you believe we are doing something unsustainable or harmful to the environment, and you can see a better way, please tell us.
Write to us at international@sanmarkkamlife.org with your suggestion. We will read it, and we will listen.
