Thoothuvalai Powder — known scientifically as Solanum trilobatum, in Tamil as Thoothuvalai (தூதுவளை), and in Sanskrit as Alarka. A thorny, twining shrub with delicate purple flowers of the Solanaceae family, its cultivation and medicinal use is documented in Siddha Gunapadam texts since the Sangam era (2nd century BCE) — making it one of the most continuously documented plants in Tamil civilisation. Ramalinga Swamigal (Vallalar) names Thoothuvalai in two distinct prescriptions of the Nithya Karma Vidhi (1867): as the second of the four herbs in the Mookotu Chooranam morning formula (Sirappu Vidhi, Rule 4), and directly among the Jnana Pachilaigal (Herbs of Wisdom) of the sunrise discipline (Sirappu Vidhi, Rule 8). The endnotes of the Nithya Karma Vidhi confirm explicitly: “Kayanthakarai and Thoothuvalai are Herbs of Wisdom (Jnana Pachilaigal).
