The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is why success doesnt bring happiness.
If you are asking this question, something real is happening. You have done everything you were supposed to do β built a career, secured your family, maintained your health β yet a quiet hollowness remains. This feeling is not a sign of ingratitude or personal failure; it is an important signal from a deeper part of you. While many traditions address this emptiness with philosophy or promises of an afterlife, Vallalar offered a direct, physiological solution.
To understand his answer, we first need to look at the man who lived it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, feeding thousands daily without interruption for over 150 years. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
The Soulβs True Purpose: What Worldly Achievement Cannot Touch
When every worldly goal has been met and something still feels missing, Vallalar taught that this is not a problem to be solved. It is the soul announcing that it has not yet received what it came here for.
Our entire lives are structured around acquiring things that are external and temporary: financial security, social standing, even a healthy body that will one day decline. These are valid human needs, but they are not the soulβs purpose. The soulβs purpose is to achieve a permanent state of blissful union with the divine grace-light, which he called Arut Perum Jyothi.
This is the only state no worldly achievement can replicate. It is not an abstract heaven after death, but a tangible, physiological transformation achievable here on Earth. The persistent feeling of emptiness is simply the soulβs honest report: βWe have gathered everything for the journey, but we have not yet begun the journey itself.β
A Compassionate Practice for an Empty Heart
To begin this inner work, Vallalar gave a simple and powerful tool: the Mahamantra. It is designed to turn oneβs attention toward the source of all compassion and light, filling the inner space that worldly success left empty.
The mantra is:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Reciting these words, even for a few minutes each day, begins to reorient the entire system. It is not a petition for help but an invocation of a reality that is always present. It calls upon the compassionate intelligence of the universe to make itself known within you, replacing the feeling of lack with a sense of boundless grace.
The Real Reason Why Success Doesnt Bring Happiness: The Body is Not Yet Ready
Vallalarβs teaching offers a radical diagnosis for the dissatisfaction that follows success. The problem is not psychological; it is physiological. The reason happiness remains elusive is that our current physical body, in its ordinary state, is an instrument for processing karma and navigating illusion (maya). It is not designed to contain or sustain a state of permanent bliss.
To achieve the soulβs goal, the physical container itself must be transformed. This is not a metaphor. Vallalar documented a precise, three-stage scientific process for evolving the human body into a vehicle of light, capable of holding a permanent connection to Arut Perum Jyothi.
The feeling of βsomething missingβ is the bodyβs own intelligence recognizing its limitations. It has mastered the material world but knows it is not prepared for the divine one.
The Three Stages of a Perfect, Blissful Body
Vallalar detailed three distinct stages of bodily transformation, moving from a dense, mortal form to an immortal body of pure light.
Suddha Deham β The Pure Body
The first stage begins with cleaning the physical instrument. This is achieved primarily through two practices. The first is a pure, plant-based diet, detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, which avoids foods that carry the vibration of suffering. The second, and more important, is the practice of Jeeva Karunyam. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. When the body is no longer creating or consuming suffering, it becomes the Suddha Deham, a pure body free from disease, waste, and the conventional process of aging.
Once the body is purified, it can be refined into the Pranava Deham. At this stage, the physical form becomes subtle, described as being made of light and sound. It is no longer bound by the same physical laws of density, hunger, or sleep. A person who has attained this state can appear and disappear at will, their body no longer a barrier but a fluid expression of consciousness.
Gnana Deham β The Wisdom Body
The final stage, which Vallalarβs own life demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham. This is a body made entirely of wisdom and divine light, in permanent, inseparable union with Arut Perum Jyothi. It is a deathless state. This perfection of the human form into a divine one is what some other traditions have hinted at, such as the Tibetan concept of the rainbow body, but Vallalar presented it as a systematic, attainable science. He is the primary historical example of its full realization, merging his physical form directly into the Vast Grace-Light.
One Action to Reconnect With Your True Purpose Today
The path Vallalar described begins not with grand spiritual feats but with a small, conscious shift in direction.
Before you check your phone or start your work, take three minutes. Sit quietly and recite the Mahamantra, not for yourself, but for the well-being of one other person. It could be a family member, a coworker, or someone you know is in pain. Direct the feeling of compassion outward. This simple act begins to realign you with the soulβs purpose, which is always rooted in universal compassion, not personal gain.
