The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is transmutation of the body spiritual. If you are seeking something more than a theory, you have come to the right place. Below, you will find the three-stage body transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpa β and what each stage actually requires.
While most spiritual traditions answer the question of death by describing what happens to the soul after it leaves the body, Vallalar asked a different question. He looked at the physical form not as a temporary vessel to be discarded, but as a material that could itself be perfected. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who claimed it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He demonstrated that the highest spiritual attainment was not leaving the world, but transforming it, starting with the human body.
On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
A Different Question About Death
The central axis of nearly every religion is the soulβs fate after physical death. The body is seen as mortal, corruptible, and temporary. It is a shell that houses the eternal spirit, which moves on to another realm or another life.
Vallalarβs path, called the Suddha Sanmarkkam, begins by turning this assumption on its head. He asked: what if the body itself could be transformed so that physical death becomes unnecessary? What if the physical cells, tissues, and elements could be purified and filled with divine light to the point where they are no longer subject to decay, disease, or dissolution?
His answer was not a metaphor. It was a repeatable, scientific process he documented for others to follow. This process aims not just for an immortal soul, but for a deathless physical body.
The Three Stages of Transmutation of the Body Spiritual
Vallalar described a precise, three-stage transformation of the physical form. Each stage marks a fundamental shift in the bodyβs composition and function, moving from dense matter to pure divine light. While some traditions, like Tibetan Dzogchen, speak of a βRainbow Body,β Vallalarβs account is distinct in its detailed, physiological stages.
The goal is to render the body impervious to destruction, allowing it to exist without the need for food or even breath, sustained directly by the divine grace-light he called Arut Perum JΕti.
Stage 1: The Pure Body (Suddha Deham)
The first and most accessible stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is the foundation upon which everything else is built. It is achieved through a radical purification of oneβs inner and outer life. The primary practices are compassion and a specific, non-violent diet.
Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This is not a passive feeling of pity, but a determined effort to alleviate the hunger, fear, and pain of all creatures. He insisted that consuming the flesh of animals, which is a product of fear and violence, makes bodily transmutation impossible. His dietary manual, Nithya Karma Vidhi, outlines a diet that avoids foods that agitate the system and favors those that create lightness and clarity.
Alongside compassion, the central practice is the recitation of the Mahamantra, a direct invocation of the grace-light:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
The translation is: βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β This mantra, Vallalar explained, directly infuses the bodyβs cells with divine intelligence and light, beginning the process of purification from within.
As the Suddha Deham is perfected, it evolves into the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. The name βPranavaβ refers to the primal sound or vibration of creation. At this stage, the body is no longer made of gross, dense matter. It becomes subtle, luminous, and refined.
According to Vallalarβs writings in the Thiru Arutpa, a person who has attained the Pranava Deham appears youthful and radiant. The body becomes extremely light and is no longer dependent on normal physical processes. It may be visible or invisible at will and is not bound by conventional physical laws. This stage represents a deep merging of matter and energy, where the bodyβs structure is sustained by divine grace rather than biological function.
Stage 3: The Wisdom Body (Gnana Deham)
The final and ultimate stage is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete and total dissolution of the bodyβs form into the pure, formless expanse of the Vast Grace-Light (Arut Perum JΕti). This is not an annihilation but a final perfection.
In the Thiru Arutpa, Vallalar describes this state as becoming one with the divine light itself. The body is no longer a body at all, but an omnipresent field of grace and intelligence. The historical accounts of Vallalarβs final disappearance, where he entered a room and vanished without a trace, are considered by followers of Sanmarkkam to be the demonstration of his attainment of the Gnana Deham. He did not die; he became the light he worshipped. This final stage remains the destination he documented and showed was possible.
One Step Toward a Lighter Body Today
You do not need to attempt all three stages at once. The entire path begins with the first step of purification. Vallalarβs teaching makes this intensely practical.
Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from his Nithya Karma Vidhi. Choose something simple and pure that does not cause suffering to any being: rice, lentils, gourds, or stem vegetables. This one act of compassion is the first movement toward a body of light.
