Spirituality Beyond Religion: Vallalar’s Universal Path

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is spirituality beyond religion. You have felt a deep, inner call that dogma and ritual cannot satisfy, and this article will show you a path built for exactly that feeling. Below, you will learn about Suddha Sanmargam, a universal way that requires no conversion, no initiation, and no new identityβ€”only compassion in action and a sincere heart.

While many spiritual traditions ask you to first believe a doctrine or join a group, Vallalar offered a path that begins with a simple, observable act. He taught that the highest spiritual science starts not with complex meditation or esoteric knowledge, but with the choice to feed a hungry person. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who built a path for everyone.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Portrait of Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβ€”though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor, the Sathya Dharma Salai in Vadalur, which has operated continuously without stopping for a single day since 1867.

On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβ€”his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

Suddha Sanmargam: A Path for Spirituality Beyond Religion

The search for spirituality outside of formal religion often leads to a collection of disconnected ideas. Vallalar’s work provides something different: a complete, coherent path called Suddha Sanmargam, or the Pure Path of Virtue. He designed it specifically for the person who feels a universal truth but finds no home in any single institution.

Suddha Sanmargam is built on a radical inclusivity. Vallalar rejected the caste system entirely. He taught that God, which he called Arut Perum Jyothi or the Vast Grace-Light, does not belong to any one religion or group of people. He welcomed every human being to the path without asking for conversion, initiation, or the abandonment of their existing faith. You can be a Christian, a Muslim, a Hindu, or an atheist and walk this path. The only identity that matters is your shared humanity.

The Two Requirements: Compassion and the Call to Grace-Light

Vallalar simplified the spiritual process to two essential, practical pillars. He taught that if these two are in place, the entire science of divine transformation will unfold naturally.

The first and most important requirement is Jeeva Karunyam, or Compassion for All Life. This is not a passive feeling of sympathy. It is the active, non-negotiable practice of preventing suffering in other living beings. It begins with the refusal to kill or cause harm for food, which is why a plant-based diet is foundational. For Vallalar, the terror and pain an animal feels at its death is absorbed by the person who eats it, creating a dense, physical obstacle to spiritual progress. Jeeva Karunyam is the key that unlocks the door to grace.

The second requirement is a sincere call to Arut Perum Jyothi, the Vast Grace-Light. This is the universal, formless intelligence and compassion that governs existence. The primary method for this call is the recitation of a Mahamantra, or Great Mantra, that he gave to the world:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€”
TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

This mantra is not a prayer to a personal deity. It is a direct address to the source of all compassion and intelligence, an acknowledgment of the grace that is available to everyone, everywhere.

The Science of a Body Made of Light

Vallalar did not present his teachings as a philosophy but as a science of transformation with observable results. He taught that the consistent practice of Jeeva Karunyam and the sincere call to the Grace-Light begins a process of profound physical change, culminating in a deathless body of light. He documented three distinct stages.

The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. Through a diet free from animal products and the constant practice of compassion, the physical body is purified of all dense, gross elements. It becomes free from disease, decay, and the need for sleep.

The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the practitioner’s compassion deepens, the physical form becomes increasingly subtle, transforming into a body of sound and light. It is no longer subject to the same physical laws of aging or injury.

The final stage, which Vallalar’s own life demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the physical form into a body of pure, incorruptible grace-light, achieving true deathlessness. This state is sometimes compared to the documented β€˜rainbow body’ phenomenon in the Tibetan Dzogchen tradition, though the methods are distinct. Vallalar’s final disappearance is considered the primary historical evidence for the Gnana Deham’s attainment.

Start with One Act of Compassion Today

The grand science of bodily transformation begins with a single, simple step. The entire path of Suddha Sanmargam is built on the foundation of Jeeva Karunyam.

Before you do anything else, find one hungry living beingβ€”a person, a bird, a stray dogβ€”and feed it. Do it with the conscious intention of easing its suffering. Do not look for a reward or even a good feeling. Simply perform the act. Vallalar taught that this single, selfless act opens a channel to grace that no amount of prayer or meditation in isolation can achieve. This is the true starting point.
