The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is soul liberation teaching. This article details the three-stage body transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpa β a path where the body itself becomes the vehicle for final freedom. I know this search can come from a place of deep curiosity. While most spiritual traditions describe what happens to the soul after it leaves the body, Vallalar asked a different question: what if the body itself could be transformed so that physical death becomes unnecessary? His answer forms one of the most direct paths to liberation ever recorded.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, feeding thousands without interruption for over 150 years. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Why Must the Body Die?
Most spiritual paths treat the body as a temporary vessel. The goal is to purify the soul so it can attain a higher realm after death, leaving the physical form behind. Soul liberation is seen as an escape from the body.
Vallalarβs teaching turns this entire premise on its head. He saw the dissolution of the body not as a natural necessity but as a failure of spiritual science. Why, he asked, should the divine intelligence that constructed the body be unable to sustain it indefinitely? He taught that the final attainment was not leaving the body, but perfecting it until it dissolved into pure, divine light, consciously and without the trauma of death.
This is not a metaphor. For Vallalar, the physical body was the laboratory in which the ultimate alchemy could be performed. The goal is to transform the gross physical elements into a subtle, immortal substance, a body of grace-light.
The Three-Stage Path to a Deathless Body
Vallalar documented a precise, three-stage process for this transformation in his work, the Thiru Arutpa. Each stage represents a radical shift in the bodyβs composition and function, moving from a form sustained by food to one sustained by divine grace alone.
Stage 1: Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)
The first stage begins with purifying the physical vessel. This is achieved through two foundational practices. The first is a strict plant-based diet, detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, which eliminates foods that carry the vibration of fear and suffering. Vallalar taught that eating meat creates a dense, heavy energy in the body that obstructs the flow of grace.
The second, and more important, practice is Jeeva Karunyam. This is not passive pity, but active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. Vallalar taught that none of the more advanced techniques can take root without a foundation of ceaseless compassion. A practitioner living with this awareness notices their body becoming lighter, more resilient to illness, and appearing youthful. The Suddha Deham is a perfected human body, no longer subject to disease or aging.
As the practice of compassion and purification deepens, the body begins its next transformation. The Pranava Deham, or Primal Body, is a form made of light and sound. Those who witnessed Vallalar in his later years described his body as having no shadow and being semi-transparent. This body is no longer dependent on physical food and can appear and disappear at will.
The central practice for developing the Pranava Deham is the constant recitation of the Mahamantra, a call to the divine grace-light:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
(The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.)
This mantra, repeated internally and externally, rewrites the bodyβs structure, replacing the gross elements with the substance of grace.
Stage 3: Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)
The final stage, the Gnana Deham or Wisdom Body, is the complete dissolution of form into the formless Vast Grace-Light. This is the ultimate aim of Vallalarβs science. According to witness accounts and his own final poems, Vallalar achieved this state when he entered the room in Mettukuppam. His body was not found because it had completed its transformation, merging entirely with the divine.
This is the culmination of the path, where the individual consciousness and its physical housing become one with the omnipresent source. While this final stage was documented through Vallalar himself, the preceding stages present a clear, systematic path for any sincere practitioner.
A Practical Soul Liberation Teaching for Today
While the concept of a deathless body may seem distant, Vallalarβs path is intensely practical. It does not begin with esoteric meditation but with what is on your plate and how you treat the being in front of you. This focus on a verifiable, physical transformation distinguishes his teaching from more abstract systems.
Some may see parallels in the Tibetan Buddhist concept of the Rainbow Body, where a masterβs body dissolves into light at death, or in the esoteric idea of the Merkaba. However, Vallalarβs approach is unique in its presentation as a systematic, repeatable science, with detailed instructions on diet, conduct, and mantra. He insisted it was a process available to anyone willing to live a life of absolute compassion.
Begin the Purification of the Body Today
You do not need to wait for a perfect moment to begin. The transformation starts with a single, conscious choice. Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from Vallalarβs Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, or stem vegetables. Notice the feeling of lightness this one small act brings. This is the first step on the path of physical and spiritual purification.
