Manjal Karisalankanni: The Golden Wisdom Herb of Suddha Sanmarkkam
Also known as Potralai Kayanthakarai, Pita Bhringaraja (Sanskrit), and scientifically as Sphagneticola calendulacea. Ramalinga Swamigal (Vallalar) names it in three distinct prescriptions of the Nithya Karma Vidhi (1867) — making it the most documented herb in the entire work. In Siddha tradition, it forms a famous herbal couple with Vellai Karisalankanni (Eclipta alba, classic Bhringaraja) — Manjal Karisalankanni is the solar, golden herb; its sister is the lunar, silver herb.
The Mookotu Chooranam Formula (Sirappu Vidhi, Rule 4): Vallalar names Potralai Kayanthakarai as the primary herb (1 part) of the morning tonic.
The Head Oil (General Rules): Vallalar prescribes a medicated head oil prepared from this herb in sesame oil, applied before bathing — once every four days or at least once weekly — as a general rule for all practitioners, not only advanced aspirants.
The Sunrise Herb List (Sirappu Vidhi, Rule 8): named directly among the Jnana Pachilaigal (Herbs of Wisdom). The endnotes confirm: “Kayanthakarai and Thoothuvalai are Herbs of Wisdom. The Adigal (Vallalar) frequently emphasized their importance.” Harvested naturally and shade-dried.
