The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is plant based spiritual life. You may have felt there was a deeper connection between what you eat and what you experience, and you were right. Here, you will understand why this isnβt about diet ethics, but about preparing the bodyβs subtle channels for a radical transformation he documented in three specific stages. While many traditions approach diet as a moral or health choice, Vallalar presented it as a non-negotiable step in spiritual science. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who documented it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a path called the Suddha Sanmarkkam, or the βTrue Path,β which was open to people of all backgrounds. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Why Diet is Spiritual Physiology, Not Just Preference
For Vallalar, a plant-based diet is not a lifestyle choice or a matter of ethical preference. It is a fundamental principle of spiritual physiology. He detailed this in his work Nithya Karma Vidhi, a manual of rules for daily practice. The instructions are not suggestions; they are presented as the necessary preparation for the body to receive a higher consciousness.
He taught that the human body is an instrument designed to receive and embody divine grace-light, which he called Arut Perum Jyothi. Just as a sensitive scientific instrument must be kept clean to function correctly, the body must be purified to perceive and integrate this light. Flesh eating, according to his teaching, is the primary contaminant. It introduces a density and a vibration of suffering that makes the body unfit for its ultimate purpose.
How Food Obstructs the Flow of Grace-Light
Vallalarβs reasoning for a plant-based diet is precise. He taught that the body is filled with subtle channels, or nadis, through which spiritual energy flows. The act of killing an animal for food imprints the fear and pain of that creatureβs death into its flesh. Consuming this flesh transfers that dense, trauma-filled energy into the person who eats it.
This density physically obstructs the nadis. It creates blockages that prevent Arut Perum Jyothi from entering and circulating freely. The body becomes too heavy, too coarse for the subtle grace-light to penetrate and begin its work of transformation. This is why he saw a plant-based diet not as a moral high ground, but as a practical necessity. It is the first step in clearing the channels so that the real work of spiritual transformation can begin.
The Three-Stage Path of a Plant Based Spiritual Life
The purpose of purifying the body is to prepare it for a complete metamorphosis into what Vallalar called the deathless body. He documented this process in three distinct stages, moving from a physical form subject to decay to a body made of pure light.
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or the Pure Body. This is achieved through a strict plant-based diet and, most importantly, the practice of Jeeva Karunyam. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This combination purifies the physical body, making it strong, free of disease, and ready for the next stage.
The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or the Primal Body. This form is subtler, less dense, and begins to take on the qualities of light. It is built through intense devotion and the constant recitation of the Mahamantra:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
(The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.)
This practice invites the grace-light to saturate the cells, transforming the pure physical body into a semi-ethereal one.
The final stage, which witness accounts attribute to Vallalar himself, is the Gnana Deham, or the Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the physical form into a body of pure grace-light, no longer subject to physical laws. This concept of bodily dissolution into light has parallels in other traditions, such as the Tibetan Rainbow Body, but Vallalar presented it as a replicable science.
One Action to Clear the Channels Today
You can apply Vallalarβs principle of spiritual physiology immediately. The work begins with the very next thing you put into your body.
Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from Vallalarβs Nithya Karma Vidhi. Choose simple, sattvic foods like rice, lentils, gourds, or stem vegetables like drumstick (Moringa). As you prepare and eat the meal, hold the awareness that you are not just feeding your hunger; you are clearing the subtle channels of your body. Notice if you feel a sense of lightness or clarity afterward. This small, conscious act is the first step in preparing the instrument for a much greater purpose.
