The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is physical transformation through spirituality. You are about to learn the three-stage process for this transformation as documented in his sacred text, Thiru Arutpa โ and what each stage truly requires. While most traditions describe what happens to the soul after it leaves the body, Vallalar asked a different question: what if the body itself could be transformed so that physical death becomes unnecessary? To understand his answer, we need to look at the man who lived it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats โ though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. Vallalar taught a path of universal compassion and worship of the divine as a formless Vast Grace-Light. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again โ his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
A Different Question: Can the Body Itself Be Transformed?
Spiritual paths typically end their inquiry at the moment of death, focusing on the soulโs subsequent destination. The body is seen as a temporary vessel to be discarded.
Vallalar inverted this premise. He proposed that the physical body, through specific practices, was not a limitation to be overcome but a vehicle capable of complete transmutation. His work was not about longevity or reversing aging in the conventional sense. It was a roadmap for dissolving the gross physical elements of the body and reconstituting it as a form made of pure divine light. This โdeathless bodyโ was not a metaphor; for Vallalar, it was the logical and scientific outcome of a life lived in total alignment with compassion and divine grace.
The Foundation of Physical Transformation Through Spirituality
Before any advanced stages can be considered, Vallalar established a foundation that is non-negotiable. He taught that none of the higher techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam โ active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings.
This principle is intensely practical. It begins with diet. In his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, Vallalar provides detailed guidance on a plant-based diet, arguing that a body fueled by the pain, fear, and violence of animal slaughter cannot become a vessel for grace. To consume meat is to internalize the vibration of suffering, making the body dense and opaque to the divine light that is meant to transform it.
The second pillar of this foundation is the recitation of the Mahamantra, a direct invocation of the Grace-Light:
Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ Taแนi Perum Karuแนai โ Aruแนญ Perum Jลti
This translates to: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light. Chanting this mantra is not a request for intervention but an act of attunement, aligning the practitioner with the very force that performs the transformation.
The Three Stages of Bodily Transmutation
Vallalar documented a three-stage process of physical transmutation in Thiru Arutpa. He presented it not as a miracle but as a methodical, repeatable science of the spirit.
Stage One: Suddha Deham โ The Pure Body
The first stage is the purification of the physical form. Through strict adherence to Jeeva Karunyam, a sattvic (pure) plant-based diet, and constant awareness of the Grace-Light, the body begins to change. Vallalar taught that in this stage, the physical form becomes immune to disease, the aging process halts, and the need for sleep and waste elimination significantly diminishes. The skin takes on a golden hue, and the body becomes naturally fragrant and luminous. It is the perfection of the physical form, making it a fit container for the next stage.
Once the body is purified, the transformation deepens. The Suddha Deham evolves into the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. In this form, the body is no longer composed of the five gross elements. It becomes a body of subtle light and sound. Historical accounts from those who knew Vallalar describe him reaching this stage, where his body cast no shadow and was imperceptible to touch. It appeared solid but was not bound by the laws of gross matter. This body can travel anywhere at the speed of thought and is indestructible by conventional means.
Stage Three: Gnana Deham โ The Wisdom Body
The final stage, the Gnana Deham or Wisdom Body, is the culmination of the path. This is the stage Vallalar himself demonstrated with his final disappearance. Here, the subtle body of light dissolves completely, merging into the omnipresent Vast Grace-Light, Arut Perum Jลti. It is not an annihilation but an ultimate expansion. The individual consciousness becomes one with the formless, universal divine consciousness, existing everywhere and in everything. This is the ultimate expression of deathlessness โ a body that has become the cosmos itself.
How Does This Compare to Other Traditions?
While Vallalarโs teaching is distinct, echoes of bodily transformation appear in other traditions. The Tibetan Buddhist path of Dzogchen speaks of the Rainbow Body (Jalus), where a masterโs physical body dissolves into light upon death, sometimes leaving only hair and nails behind. Esoteric systems also speak of a โMerkabaโ or โlight bodyโ as a vehicle for consciousness.
The key difference in Vallalarโs science is its explicit emphasis on compassion, particularly diet, as the non-negotiable engine of transformation. For him, the process was not an esoteric energy technique available to a select few but a natural law. A body built on non-harm and saturated with the awareness of divine grace will, by its very nature, transform into light.
Start with One Compassionate Meal Today
The path to the deathless body begins with a single, conscious choice. It starts with Jeeva Karunyam.
Replace one meal today with a simple, plant-based option from Vallalarโs Nithya Karma Vidhi. Choose rice, lentils, bananas, or leafy greens. As you eat, consider that this meal caused no fear or pain to any living being. This small act aligns you with the foundational principle of the entire path.
A person who begins this practice may, after a few weeks, notice a subtle feeling of physical lightness or mental clarity after meals. This is a small but direct experience of what Vallalarโs teaching suggests: when the principle of compassion is applied to the body, the body responds.
