Physical Immortality Teaching: Vallalar’s Three Stages

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is physical immortality teaching.

If you are searching for this, you are not asking a casual question. This search comes from a real place of pain or fear β€” the dread of finality, the grief of loss, or the deep human ache for something permanent in a world where everything disappears. It’s a feeling I know is real because it is so fundamental to being alive. Vallalar’s work speaks directly to this feeling, not with philosophy, but with a documented, scientific path. While many traditions speak of the soul’s immortality, Vallalar offered a detailed science for the body’s transformation into an indestructible substance of light.

To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who claimed it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

The Three-Body Transformation: A Documented Path

Physical immortality is not a metaphor or a myth in Vallalar’s teaching. It is the explicit destination of the path he laid out in thousands of verses. He described a step-by-step process for transforming the gross physical body into an indestructible body of pure grace-light.

This transformation happens in three distinct, sequential stages:

  1. Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)
  2. Pranava Deham (The Primal Body)
  3. Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)

Each stage is the result of specific practices, primarily rooted in compassion and a purified diet, which systematically refine the physical form until it is no longer subject to decay, disease, or death.

What is the Suddha Deham (Pure Body)?

The Suddha Deham is the foundation of the entire process. It is the purification of the physical body from all dense, death-causing influences. Vallalar taught that the primary cause of disease and decay is the consumption of meat and the perpetuation of suffering in other beings.

To achieve the Suddha Deham, he prescribed two core practices. The first is a strict plant-based diet, detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, which eliminates foods that carry the vibration of fear and pain. The second, and more important, is Jeeva Karunyam β€” active, relentless compassion for all living beings.

Vallalar taught that none of the more advanced techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam. The act of preventing and alleviating the suffering of othersβ€”from feeding the hungry to protecting the vulnerableβ€”is what begins to purify the cells and structure of one’s own body, making it receptive to grace.

Pranava Deham and Gnana Deham: The Body of Light

Once the Suddha Deham is perfected through years of compassionate living and dietary purity, the body begins its next transformation into the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This is a body of light and sound, no longer made of gross matter. It is said to be golden, immune to the elements, and capable of appearing and disappearing at will.

The final stage, which Vallalar documented and appears to have historically demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the physical form into the Vast Grace-Light (Arut Perum Jothi). It is not death but a total transformation into a deathless, divine substance. This state is sometimes compared to the β€œrainbow body” in Tibetan traditions, where a master’s physical form dissolves into light upon death, but Vallalar’s teaching details a process to be completed while fully alive.

The Gnana Deham is the ultimate outcome of his scienceβ€”a body that is one with Divine Compassion, an eternal form of grace. Based on historical accounts and his own writings, this is the state Vallalar achieved before his final disappearance.

The Daily Practice of Vallalar’s Physical Immortality Teaching

The path to the deathless body begins not with complex esoteric rites, but with simple, repeatable daily actions. The entire science rests on the ever-expanding practice of compassion. Vallalar gave a Mahamantra to orient the mind and body toward the Grace-Light that makes this transformation possible.

Within this practice, you can recite the Mahamantra, a tool for invoking the divine grace-light:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to: β€œThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.”

Reciting this while performing acts of service or simply holding a compassionate intention for others begins to restructure the body’s inner environment. This is not a request for a miracle; Vallalar described it as a scientific principle. A body filled with compassion cannot simultaneously be a body that decays.

A practitioner, after weeks of consciously choosing plant-based meals and feeding stray animals in their neighborhood, might notice a subtle feeling of physical lightness or mental clarity. Vallalar’s teaching suggests this isn’t a coincidence, but the first tangible effect of Jeeva Karunyam beginning to purify the body.

One Concrete Action to Begin Today

The path of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The path to a deathless body begins with a single meal.

Before your next meal, consciously choose a plant-based option. As you eat, take one minute to consider the life you are not harming through your choice. This small act of awareness is the first step of Jeeva Karunyam, the absolute foundation for creating the Pure Body. It costs nothing, but it is the start of everything.
