Nonviolent Lifestyle Spiritual: Vallalar’s Path to Transformation

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is nonviolent lifestyle spiritual. Below, you will learn the three stages of divine bodily transformation Vallalar documented in his writingsโ€”and see how they are the direct result of a life dedicated to active compassion. Itโ€™s a claim that can feel almost unbelievable, but he left behind a science for it. While many great traditions connect nonviolence to peace of mind or ethical living, Vallalar linked it directly to a biological process available to the human body. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who demonstrated it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsโ€”though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, feeding thousands without interruption since 1867. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againโ€”his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

From Ahimsa to Jeeva Karunyam: The Foundation of Transformation

Ahimsaโ€”nonviolenceโ€”is a foundational principle in many spiritual traditions. It is often understood as a passive restraint: not causing harm to other beings. Vallalar took this concept and made it active, dynamic, and the very engine of spiritual evolution. He called this active principle Jeeva Karunyam, which translates to compassion for all souls.

For Vallalar, Jeeva Karunyam was not an abstract feeling or a moral guideline. It was a tangible practice of seeing the hunger, fear, and suffering in another living being and taking direct action to alleviate it. This includes the suffering of animals raised for food. Vallalar taught that eating meat creates a direct karmic and biological obstacle to spiritual progress because it is built on the fear and pain of a conscious being.

This practice is the necessary first step. Without it, he taught, no mantra, diet, or meditation can take root. Compassion is the soil. It is the simple act of feeding a hungry person or animal, not for reward or good karma, but because their suffering is felt as oneโ€™s own.

A person feeling disconnected and heavy inside makes a simple choice to leave out a bowl of water for birds on a hot day. In the moment of watching a small creature drink, the inner weight lessens, not through analysis or self-help, but through a simple, outward act of care. That shift is the beginning of Jeeva Karunyam in practice.

The Science of a nonviolent lifestyle spiritual: How Compassion Rewrites the Body

Vallalar made a claim that distinguishes his teachings from nearly all others. He stated that the consistent practice of Jeeva Karunyam, combined with a specific plant-based diet and devotion to the divine, initiates a physical transformation of the body. He documented this process in three distinct stages.

Suddha Deham: The Pure Body

The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is the result of purifying the physical self of all influences born from violence and suffering. The primary practice is a strict plant-based diet, detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, which eliminates meat, fish, eggs, and even certain stimulating plants. This diet, combined with the constant practice of compassion, cleanses the body. Vallalar taught that in this stage, the body becomes immune to disease, and the graying of hair and wrinkling of skin ceases.

Pranava Deham: The Primal Body

As the practice of Jeeva Karunyam deepens, the transformation progresses to the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This is a body of grace and light, which Vallalar described as becoming increasingly subtle and luminous. Witnesses documented that his own body in this stage ceased to cast a shadow. The physical form becomes eternally youthful, impervious to harm, and does not require conventional food or sleep. The central practice for cultivating this state is the recitation of the Mahamantra, a call to the divine Grace-Light:

Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ€” Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ€”
Taแน‡i Perum Karuแน‡ai โ€” Aruแนญ Perum Jลti

This translates to: โ€œThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.โ€ This mantra, Vallalar taught, attunes the body to the divine light that sustains the universe.

Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body

The final stage is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the physical form into a body of pure light, a permanent merging with the Arut Perum Jลti, or Vast Grace-Light. Vallalar is the only figure for whom this complete transformation is historically documented. His final disappearance, observed by officials, is presented in his teachings not as an escape from the world, but as the ultimate demonstration of human potential. While this has parallels to accounts of the โ€œrainbow bodyโ€ in Tibetan traditions, Vallalarโ€™s path was presented as a repeatable science, accessible to anyone who fully commits to the path of universal compassion.

Take One Step Toward the Pure Body Today

You do not need to accomplish everything at once. The path begins with a single, conscious choice rooted in compassion. Vallalarโ€™s teaching is intensely practical.

Today, replace one animal-based meal with a plant-based option from his Nithya Karma Vidhi. Choose simple, sattvic foods like rice, lentils (dals), or stem vegetables like drumstick (Moringa) or plantain stem. As you eat, hold the awareness that this meal did not require the suffering of any living being. Notice the feeling of lightness in the body that follows. This is the first step in the science of compassion.
