The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is meaning of divine grace. Below, you will find the exact path he documented for receiving it β a path that transforms not only the mind but the physical body itself. The search for grace is not an abstract one; it often begins when we feel its absence. While many traditions speak of grace as a mysterious gift, Vallalar offered a specific instruction, a direct cause-and-effect relationship he discovered through his own experience. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who claimed it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for the Suddha Sanmarkkam (the True Path) and a free eating house that has fed the hungry continuously since 1867. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
The True Meaning of Divine Grace Is Compassion in Action
Most spiritual paths teach that divine grace is received through prayer, devotion, or ritual. Vallalarβs teaching is distinct in its precision. In his work Jeevakarunyam Ozhukkam (The Conduct of Compassion), he stated that the one and only way to receive divine grace is to practice compassion toward all living beings.
He did not present this as a philosophy to be debated but as a direct instruction. For Vallalar, compassion was not a passive feeling of pity. It was an active, urgent response to the suffering of another being, whether human or animal. He taught that seeing a hungry being and not feeding it, or seeing a suffering being and not helping it, closes the door to grace.
Prayer alone is insufficient. Devotion in isolation is incomplete. According to Vallalar, the key that unlocks the flow of divine grace is the sincere, active practice of Jeeva Karunyam. This is the foundation upon which every other spiritual attainment is built.
How Compassion Unlocks the Three Stages of the Light Body
Vallalar taught that the consistent practice of compassion, combined with a plant-based diet and specific mantras, initiates a literal, physical transformation. This process unfolds in three distinct stages, moving the physical form from a state of gross matter to one of pure light. This was not a metaphor; he documented the science of it in his writings like Nithya Karma Vidhi.
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This body becomes impervious to disease, decay, and the effects of time. It is achieved through a strict adherence to Jeeva Karunyam β primarily by not causing suffering to other beings through diet β and the purification of internal energies. The body becomes light, strong, and radiant.
Next is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This form is subtler, appearing to be around twelve years old. It is visible but not always tangible to others. This stage marks a deeper integration with the grace-light, where the physical structure is no longer governed by the ordinary laws of biology.
The final stage, which Vallalar alone is documented to have fully realized, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is a body of pure light, a complete merging with the divine grace-light itself, or Arut Perum Jyothi. This state is sometimes compared to the Tibetan rainbow body or the conceptual Merkaba field, but Vallalarβs account is a direct, first-person record of a biological process. His physical disappearance was, according to his teachings, the final step in this transformation.
Arut Perum Jyothi: The Experience of Grace-Light
The goal of this transformation is to become a vessel for Arut Perum Jyothi, which translates to the Vast Grace-Light. This is not a distant, abstract God but an omnipresent reality of intelligent, compassionate light. Vallalar experienced this light directly and taught that every human being has the potential to do the same.
The practice he gave to attune the mind and body to this grace-light is the recitation of a Mahamantra, or Great Mantra. He encouraged its constant repetition, silently or aloud, to reorient oneβs entire being toward the reality of grace.
The Mahamantra is:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
The translation is:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Reciting this is not a plea for grace but an affirmation of its constant presence. It is the sound-form of the very reality that compassion allows us to access.
One Small Act of Compassion Today
Vallalarβs path from theory to reality begins with a single step. Today, find one opportunity to practice Jeeva Karunyam for a non-human being. This could be as simple as putting out a bowl of clean water for birds or feeding a stray animal.
Notice the feeling that arises after this small act. Vallalar taught that this quiet sense of rightness, this subtle inner peace, is the first taste of divine grace responding to your action. It is the beginning of the great science of compassion.
