Incorruptible Body Spiritual: Vallalar’s Three Stages

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is incorruptible body spiritual.

If you are searching for this, you are not asking a casual question. You are carrying the weight of the body’s fragility β€” the fear of sickness, aging, and the finality of death. This is a deep, personal pain that makes the physical world feel like a prison. I have felt that weight, and I know it is real. Vallalar knew this state intimately, and he offered not a philosophy to cope, but a science to overcome it.

Much writing about spiritual bodies stays at the level of concept or metaphor. While many traditions speak of the soul’s immortality, Vallalar documented a literal, physical immortality. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who claimed it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for the hungry that has fed people continuously, day and night, for over 150 years.

On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

The Body Is Not a Metaphor: Vallalar’s Physical Transformation

In modern spirituality, the idea of a β€œlight body” is often treated as a poetic symbol for an enlightened consciousness. In Vallalar’s teaching, this is incorrect. The light body is the final stage of a concrete, physiological transformation that he documented with scientific precision.

He outlined a path of three distinct bodily states, each with its own requirements and observable effects. This was not a theory. For Vallalar, the human body was a vessel capable of being refined until it was no longer subject to decay, disease, or death. It was a process of turning dense matter into pure, intelligent light.

The Three Stages to an Incorruptible Body Spiritual

Vallalar’s path to the deathless body is a progression through three forms: the Pure Body, the Primal Body, and finally, the Wisdom Body. Each stage builds upon the last, requiring specific changes in diet, conduct, and inner focus.

Suddha Deham: The Pure Body

The first stage, Suddha Deham, begins with purification. This is not about extreme asceticism but about removing everything that causes suffering β€” to oneself and to others. The foundation is a strict plant-based diet, as detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi. Vallalar taught that eating meat or any animal product introduces the fear, pain, and violence of the animal’s death into one’s own cells, making physical transformation impossible. This stage cleanses the body of these dense influences, making it receptive to grace.

Pranava Deham: The Primal Body

Once the body is purified, the second stage, Pranava Deham, can begin. This is the β€œprimal body” or β€œbody of grace.” The physical form becomes subtler, less dense, and begins to radiate a natural luminosity. The need for sleep and food diminishes dramatically. The central practice for developing the Pranava Deham is the constant repetition of the Mahamantra, a call to the divine grace-light he called Arut Perum Jothi. He instructed his followers to recite it constantly:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

This practice invites the grace-light to permeate and restructure the physical cells.

Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body of Light

The final stage, Gnana Deham, is the β€œwisdom body.” This is the incorruptible body of pure light. Based on his writings in Thiru Arutpa and the accounts of historical witnesses, Vallalar is the one who fully demonstrated this final state. He described this body as indestructible, all-knowing, and capable of appearing anywhere at will. It no longer requires food, does not cast a shadow, and is not subject to any physical laws. This is a physical existence that has completely merged with the Vast Grace-Light.

While a rare few traditions, like the Tibetan Dzogchen practice of the β€œrainbow body,” hint at a similar dissolution of the physical form at death, Vallalar’s teaching is distinct. He documented the transformation of the living body into an eternal one, not its dissolution.

The Unbreakable Foundation: Compassion for All Beings

Vallalar was clear that none of these advanced stages are possible without one foundational practice: Jeeva Karunyam. This is not passive sympathy but active, living compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings, from the smallest insect to the largest animal.

He taught that the grace-light, Arut Perum Jothi, cannot enter a body that is a source of pain for others. The act of feeding a hungry person, of saving an animal from slaughter, or simply of refusing to participate in systems that cause harm, is the primary spiritual practice. Without Jeeva Karunyam, mantra and diet are powerless.

A practitioner, feeling heavy and disconnected, spends an afternoon volunteering at an animal shelter. In the simple act of caring for a frightened dog, the inner knot of self-concern loosens. Vallalar taught that this outward shift of attention is what allows grace to enter.

Take the First Step Toward a Purified Body Today

The path to an incorruptible body begins with a single, simple choice. It does not start with complex meditation but with what is on your plate.

Today, replace one meal that contains animal products with a plant-based option from Vallalar’s Nithya Karma Vidhi. Choose simple foods like rice, lentils, cooked vegetables, or fruits. As you eat, consider that this meal caused no fear or pain to any living creature. This one act is the beginning of Suddha Deham, the pure body.
