The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to make the body immortal.
If you are asking this question, you are likely carrying a heavy weight. It may be the fear of your own ending, the fresh pain of losing someone, or a deep sense that this physical form is too fragile and temporary for the consciousness it holds. This search does not come from idle curiosity; it comes from a real place of suffering. Vallalar knew this state personally and treated this question not as a fantasy, but as the most important scientific problem a human being could solve.
Much writing about physical immortality treats it as a metaphor or a myth. Vallalarβs work is different because he presented a step-by-step, repeatable process for transforming the body from gross matter into an indestructible form of pure light. To understand his answer, we first need to look at the man who claimed to have completed the process himself.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught that the ultimate destination of human life was not an afterlife in heaven, but the complete transformation of the physical body into a deathless body of grace-light.
On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
The Deathless Body: A Science, Not a Myth
In Vallalarβs teaching, physical immortality is not a miracle reserved for a chosen few. It is the natural, though rarely achieved, endpoint of a specific spiritual science. He saw the human body not as a fixed, decaying object, but as a structure that could be systematically purified and refined until it transcended the laws of ordinary biology.
The entire process is fueled by what he called Arut Perum Jyothi, or the Vast Grace-Light. This is not just a concept, but a tangible divine force that, when invoked, begins to saturate the cells, replacing gross physical substance with its own luminous nature. The path he laid out is a direct method for inviting this Grace-Light to do its work of transformation.
This is fundamentally different from traditions that see the body as an obstacle to be discarded at death. For Vallalar, the body is the very laboratory in which the ultimate alchemy is performed.
How to Make the Body Immortal: The Three Stages of Transformation
Vallalar documented a precise, three-stage evolution of the physical form. Each stage represents a radical shift in the bodyβs composition, function, and relationship to the physical world. He insisted this was a practical, physiological process, not just a change in consciousness.
Suddha Deham: The Pure Body
The first stage, Suddha Deham, is the foundation for everything that follows. It is the process of purifying the physical body of all dense, heavy, and death-inducing qualities. This is achieved through three core practices.
The first is diet. Vallalar gave specific dietary guidelines in a text called Nithya Karma Vidhi. He taught that eating meat or any food derived from the suffering of another being introduces the vibrations of fear, pain, and death directly into the cells, making transformation impossible. A plant-based diet, free from cruelty, is the first step in making the body a suitable vessel for the Grace-Light.
The second practice is the most important: Jeeva Karunyam. This is active, living compassion. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. It is the conscious choice to relieve the hunger, thirst, and pain of others. This outward flow of compassion purifies the inner self and makes it receptive to grace.
The third practice is devotion, centered on the recitation of the Mahamantra: AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti. This translates to βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β Chanting this mantra directly invokes the transformative power of the Grace-Light, calling it into the body.
A person beginning this path might notice, after a few weeks of eating simple plant-based food and feeding stray dogs in their neighborhood, that a chronic physical ache has lessened. Vallalar taught that this is a direct result of reducing the bodyβs load of suffering.]
As the Suddha Deham is perfected, the body begins its transformation into the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. The βPrimal Bodyβ refers to a form made of light and sound, the primary elements of creation. At this stage, the physical body becomes increasingly subtle, luminous, and less subject to physical laws like aging, disease, or injury.
Those who witnessed Vallalar in his later years described his body as having no shadow and being almost translucent. This corresponds to the characteristics of the Pranava Deham. It is a body that is still physically present but is composed more of light than of dense matter. It is a state that has parallels in other traditions, such as the βrainbow bodyβ described in some Tibetan Buddhist lineages, though the process and final outcome in Vallalarβs path are distinct. The body becomes light, resilient, and appears perpetually youthful.
Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body
The final stage, which Vallalarβs own disappearance suggests he achieved, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete and final transformation of the physical form into a body made entirely of Vast Grace-Light. It is no longer physical in any conventional sense. It is an immortal, indestructible body of pure consciousness and grace that can appear or disappear at will.
According to Thiru Arutpa, this body is not subject to any physical limitations. It does not need food or sleep and cannot be harmed by any element. It is the ultimate union of matter and spirit, where the individual consciousness merges fully with the divine Grace-Light without losing its unique existence. The historical accounts of Vallalar entering the room in Mettukuppam and vanishing without a trace are considered by followers of Sanmarkkam to be the only documented demonstration of this final stage.
Start Today by Relieving Suffering
The path to the deathless body does not begin with complex esoteric rites. According to Vallalar, it begins with a simple, concrete act of compassion. The entire science of bodily transformation is built upon the foundation of Jeeva Karunyam.
Your first step is to consciously choose to reduce the suffering of another living being. This could be as simple as feeding a hungry bird, offering water to a thirsty stray animal, or ensuring your next meal is one that caused no creature to suffer. This is not a symbolic gesture; Vallalar taught that the act of relieving anotherβs pain directly purifies the substance of your own body and opens the door for grace to enter.
