The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to heal from being emotionally hurt.
When you are hurting this way, words can feel hollow. Advice from others, no matter how well-intentioned, often misses the mark entirely. It is a weight that feels uniquely and completely your own. Vallalar knew this state of isolation, and his teaching for it is radically practical. While many traditions offer explanations for pain, Vallalar offered a starting point that requires no understanding at all.
To see why his approach is different, we need to look at the man who documented it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats โ though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught that the human body was capable of becoming a deathless body of light, and that compassion was the master key to this transformation. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again โ his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
An Anchor for When Everything Is Chaos
Emotional pain and grief are among the most isolating experiences a person can have. In the acute moment, the mind spins, replaying hurts and feeding a sense of despair. No amount of good advice makes the weight lighter.
Vallalarโs practical teaching begins not with explanation but with one act. He offered an anchor for the mind when everything else is chaos: the Maha-mantra.
Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ
Taแนi Perum Karuแนai โ Aruแนญ Perum Jลti
The translation is: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
This is not a prayer of petition. It is a tool. Reciting it gives the mind a single, clean point of focus. It does not erase the pain, but it interrupts the spiraling thoughts that magnify it. It is a way to hold on to something steady when you are lost in the storm.
Removing the Suffering of Others From Your Body
Vallalar connected our inner state directly to what we consume. He taught that when we eat animals, we are consuming not just flesh, but the fear and pain the creature experienced at its death. This intake of suffering creates a dense, agitated state in the body and mind, making it much harder to find peace.
His solution, detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, was a clean diet free from the suffering of other beings. This is not about achieving a moral high ground. It is a practical method for clearing the static.
By choosing plant-based foods, you stop introducing external violence and terror into your own system. This act alone begins to quiet the body, creating a clearer space within which your own emotional hurt can begin to heal without being constantly aggravated by the pain of others.
The Paradox: Why Helping Others Is How to Heal From Being Emotionally Hurt
When in deep pain, the natural instinct is to withdraw and focus inward on the hurt. Vallalar taught the opposite path. The foundation of his entire science is Jeeva Karunyam โ active, living compassion for all beings that suffer.
He showed a path through grief that does not require understanding it first. It requires turning your attention, even for a moment, to the suffering of another. This is the paradox: the way out of your own pain is to ease the pain of someone else.
This does not mean pretending you are fine. It means acting with compassion while you are in pain. This act breaks the powerful spell of self-focused grief. Vallalar taught that this outward turn is a direct medicine for the heart.
This could be as simple as leaving a bowl of water out for birds on a hot day or feeding a single hungry person. In that small moment of focusing on anotherโs thirst or hunger, your own heavy thoughts are given a moment of rest.
One Action to Start the Healing Today
Before you do anything else, take five minutes. Find a quiet space and recite the Mahamantra: Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ Taแนi Perum Karuแนai โ Aruแนญ Perum Jลti.
Do not do it for yourself. Direct the feeling of it toward someone else you know who is suffering. This small shift in focus from your pain to theirs is the beginning of the path Vallalar showed. It is the first step in letting the grace-light in.
