Many people seek clarity, serenity, or a closer relationship with life when they meditate. A “light body”-a condition of being that seems lighter, more alive, and less burdened by fear, anger, and suffering-is another concept that some people ponder.
An unexpected response was provided by Tamil Nadu spiritual guru Vallalar in the 19th century. He emphasized that meditation is insufficient on its own.
Every day, you can spend hours in silence. You can pick up breathing exercises, chants, and techniques. However, something crucial is lacking if you start and finish your practice with yourself.
According to Vallalar, compassion is the first step toward true transformation.

Who Was Vallalar?
Vallalar, also called Ramalinga Swamigal, devoted his life to figuring out how people can become closer to inner freedom, love, and truth.
His message was based on the straightforward idea that all living things should be treated with kindness.
He advocated feeding the hungry, spoke out against cruelty, and urged people to see the interconnectedness of all life. He saw spirituality as an integral part of everyday life. It was demonstrated by the way we treat other people.
Why Compassion Matters
The majority of individuals consider meditation to be an introspective process. Vallalar concurred that it’s critical to look within. However, he thought that the heart also needed to open outward.
Something within of us changes when compassion increases. We become more conscious of the suffering around us and less preoccupied with our own problems. This change calms the ego, softens the mind, and makes room for more profound spiritual development.
According to Vallalar, compassion and meditation are one and the same. They collaborate.
One makes the other stronger.
The Mantra Vallalar Recommended
One practice Vallalar often shared was this prayer:
Arut Perum Jothi
Arut Perum Jothi
Thani Perum Karunai
Arut Perum Jothi
It is often translated as:
“Infinite Grace-Light.
Infinite Grace-Light.
Supreme Compassion.
Infinite Grace-Light.”
For Vallalar, these words were not meant to be repeated mechanically. They were a reminder to hold compassion for all beings, not just ourselves.
What Does “Light Body” Mean?
The concept is understood differently by different people. It is considered a spiritual state by some. Some perceive it as a sense of inner serenity, lightness, and release from emotional loads.
From cleansing to wisdom, Vallalar outlined phases of metamorphosis. However, he continually referred to the same basis: empathy. Without it, engaging in spiritual activities may turn into another way to focus on oneself. It transforms meditation into something far more profound.
A Simple Place to Start
Long meditation sessions or intricate rituals are not necessary.
Begin modestly.
Every day, set aside some quiet time to repeat the phrase or just sit in silence and wish others well. Then implement that goal in your day-to-day activities. When you can, assist someone. Give food to someone who is hungry. Talk softly. Be kind without anticipating anything in return. These actions could appear insignificant.
According to Vallalar, this is the start of true change. Becoming exceptional is not the aim. Increasing one’s awareness, compassion, and sense of connection to life is the aim. From there, everything else develops.
