How Saints Transformed Their Bodies: Vallalar’s 3 Stages

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how saints transformed their bodies. Below, you will find the three-stage body transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpaβ€”the Suddha Deham, Pranava Deham, and Gnana Dehamβ€”and the specific practices required for the first stage. Most spiritual traditions answer the question of death by describing what happens to the soul after it leaves the body. Vallalar asked a different question: what if the body itself could be transformed so that physical death becomes unnecessary? To understand his answer, we must first look at the man who lived it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Portrait of Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβ€”though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He demonstrated abilities that defied conventional explanation, yet he always pointed away from himself and toward the universal principles of compassion and grace. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβ€”his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

A Different Question About Death

The search for immortality is ancient. Most traditions locate it in the soul, spirit, or consciousness that survives the decay of the physical form. Vallalar’s work is distinct because he focused on the physical body as the very instrument of transformation. His central question was not how to escape the body, but how to perfect it.

He saw the body not as a temporary vessel to be discarded, but as a dense form of light that could be purified and returned to its native state. For him, disease, aging, and death were not inevitable laws but correctable errors caused by a life lived out of harmony with compassion and divine grace. His entire life’s work was the documentation of a repeatable science to correct these errors.

The Three Stages of Bodily Transformation

Vallalar outlined a precise, three-stage process for transforming the physical body into a deathless body of light. This is not a metaphor for spiritual enlightenment but a literal, biological progression. Each stage has a specific name and distinct characteristics.

The Suddha Deham (Pure Body)

The first stage begins with purifying the physical body. This is achieved through a combination of compassionate action and specific dietary changes. The foundation for this entire process is not diet or mantra, but what Vallalar called Jeeva Karunyam. He taught that none of these techniques can take root without active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. The body cannot become light while causing heaviness and fear in others.

Diet is the physical expression of this compassion. In his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, Vallalar specifies a plant-based diet, teaching that eating meat creates suffering and introduces dense, agitated energies into the body. The central practice for cultivating the inner state of purity is the recitation of the Mahamantra: β€˜AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti’. This translates to β€˜The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.’

A person beginning this path might notice, after a few weeks of eating simple plant-based meals and practicing compassion, that their sleep is deeper and their thoughts are calmer. This initial feeling of physical and mental lightness is the first sign of the Suddha Deham taking root, just as Vallalar taught.

The Pranava Deham (Primal Body)

As the Suddha Deham is perfected, it evolves into the Pranava Deham. This is a body made of subtle sound and light, no longer subject to the gross physical laws of aging, injury, or disease. Accounts in the Thiru Arutpa describe this body as golden, visible but not tangible in the ordinary sense. It no longer requires physical food for sustenance, instead drawing its energy directly from the divine grace-light, or Arut Perum Jōti.

This stage marks a significant shift from purification to transformation. The body becomes a perfected instrument, ageless and tireless, capable of perceiving realities beyond the five senses. While some esoteric traditions allude to similar forms, like the Tibetan Rainbow Body or Merkaba, Vallalar’s teachings present this as a structured, attainable step in a larger process.

The Gnana Deham (Wisdom Body)

The final stage is the complete dissolution of form into pure consciousness. The Gnana Deham is a body of pure light and wisdom, no longer separate from the Vast Grace-Light that is its source. It is formless, omnipresent, and eternal.

This final stage is what witnesses and Vallalar’s own writings describe as his final state before his disappearance. It is presented as the ultimate destination he demonstrated, a complete merging with the divine while retaining individual consciousness. The attainment of the Gnana Deham is the ultimate answer to the question of death: it is not overcome, but made irrelevant.

How Saints Transformed Their Bodies: The Science of Grace

Vallalar was adamant that this three-stage transformation was not a miracle but a science. The β€œenergy source” for this process is Arut Perum Jōti, the Vast Grace-Light, which he described as an intelligent, compassionate, and universally available force.

The key to accessing this grace-light is Jeeva Karunyam. By practicing active compassionβ€”feeding the hungry, caring for all beings, and refusing to cause harmβ€”a person aligns their own body and consciousness with the nature of grace. This alignment allows the grace-light to enter the physical system and begin the work of purification and transformation.

In this view, the body is not just a collection of cells. It is a structure capable of receiving and expressing divine light. The process of how saints transformed their bodies, according to Vallalar, was the methodical process of removing every obstacleβ€”cruelty, dense foods, selfish thoughtsβ€”that blocked this light from perfecting its own physical expression.

One Step Toward a Lighter Body Today

You do not need to attempt all three stages to begin. The path starts with a single, simple action rooted in compassion. Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from Vallalar’s Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, or stem vegetables like drumstick (Moringa) or brinjal (eggplant). See this not as a restriction, but as an act of removing a small amount of suffering from the world. This is the first practical step toward a purer, lighter body.
