The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is holy sages spiritual wisdom. This article explains the practical path that begins after spiritual awakening—the transformation of daily life and the body itself, as documented by one of history’s most remarkable figures. That quiet question you’ve been asking has an answer. Much writing about spiritual wisdom stays at the level of concept without a precise path. Vallalar provided a science of transformation, accessible to anyone willing to practice. To understand why his guidance matters, we need to look at the man who lived it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats—though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, serving thousands of free meals daily without regard to caste or creed. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again—his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Spiritual Awakening Is Not the Destination, But the Starting Point
In many traditions, spiritual awakening is treated as a final goal. For Vallalar, it is the first step. The recognition that something deeper exists, that the material world does not fully satisfy, that the soul craves something it has not yet found: this is the first stirring of a divine possibility.
He identified this initial spark as the beginning of Jeeva Karunyam, or compassion for all life, opening the path toward Arut Perum Jyothi—the Vast Grace-Light. The awakening itself is not the prize. It is the moment you realize a door exists. What matters is what you do next—how you choose to walk through it, day by day. This is where the practical path begins.
The Path After Awakening: Compassion as the Foundation
After the initial awakening, Vallalar’s path is not one of complex meditation or esoteric ritual. It is grounded in a single, powerful practice: Jeeva Karunyam. This is not passive sympathy, but active compassion that works to prevent suffering in other living beings.
Vallalar taught that the divine grace-light cannot take root in a body or consciousness that contributes to the pain of others. The fear and pain an animal experiences when it is killed becomes part of the person who consumes it, creating a dense, heavy block to spiritual progress. Therefore, the very first step in purifying the self is to stop causing harm. This principle extends to all interactions—with people, animals, and the world itself. It is the ethical foundation upon which all higher states are built.
The Three Stages of Holy Sages Spiritual Wisdom
Once the foundation of compassion is established, Vallalar documented a three-stage process of physical and spiritual transformation. He described this not as a metaphor, but as a literal, scientific progression toward a deathless state.
Stage 1: Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)
The first stage begins with the purification of the physical form. This is achieved through a strict plant-based diet and the consistent practice of Jeeva Karunyam. By ceasing to consume meat and living a life of active kindness, the body begins to shed its gross, dense nature. Vallalar taught that this process makes the body light, resilient to disease, and gradually stills the chaotic agitations of the mind. The Suddha Deham is a body prepared to receive and hold a greater intensity of divine light.
As the body becomes pure, it becomes capable of subtler practices. The Pranava Deham, or Primal Body, is developed through the constant inner and outer recitation of the Mahamantra. This is the central practice for transforming the physical body into a body of grace. Vallalar gave this mantra for all of humanity:
Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Aruṭ Perum Jōti —
Taṇi Perum Karuṇai — Aruṭ Perum Jōti
This translates to: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
This mantra, he taught, restructures the very substance of the body, turning it from a form of flesh and blood into one of divine sound and light. It is no longer sustained by physical food alone but is increasingly nourished by the grace-light itself.
Stage 3: Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)
The final stage, the Gnana Deham or Wisdom Body, is the complete transformation of the physical form into pure Arut Perum Jyothi. According to the Thiru Arutpa and witness accounts, Vallalar himself achieved this state. His physical body became a body of pure, radiant light, no longer subject to physical laws, decay, or death. This is the ultimate destination of his path: a deathless physical existence merged entirely with the divine. While this state has been hinted at in other traditions, such as the Tibetan rainbow body, Vallalar’s account is distinct for its scientific precision and its claim to be a repeatable process.
One Concrete Action to Begin Today
The entire path begins with a single, conscious choice rooted in compassion. Before your next meal, take a moment to look at the food on your plate. Acknowledge the life within it—the sunlight, water, and earth that contributed to it. If it is plant-based, express gratitude for its nourishment. This small act of awareness is the first step in practicing Jeeva Karunyam and beginning the purification of the body.
