Free Spirituality Books: Vallalar’s Path Beyond Words

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is free spirituality books. It’s a search that often leads to more questions than answers, leaving you with shelves of concepts but no clear path. This article explains the one requirement Vallalar set for direct access to Godβ€”a path that needs no books, no gurus, and no religion. While many traditions offer extensive libraries of scripture, Vallalar presented a science written not on paper, but in the heart through compassionate action. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who documented it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Portrait of Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβ€”though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established the Sathya Gnana Sabai (Hall of True Wisdom) as a place of worship open to all, and the Sathya Dharma Salai, a charity that has fed the hungry continuously for over 150 years. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβ€”his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

Why Vallalar’s Path Offers More Than Free Spirituality Books

Your search for free spirituality books comes from a sincere desire for truth. Vallalar taught that this truth cannot be found in any text, however sacred. His path, Suddha Sanmargam or the Pure Path of Virtue, belongs to no religion, caste, or country. It is a direct, unmediated relationship with the divine, which he called Arut Perum Jyothiβ€”the Vast Grace-Light.

This path requires no conversion, no initiation, and no intermediary. It is built for every human being who seeks God sincerely. The teachings are not a philosophy to be studied but a science to be practiced. The β€œbook” is your own life, and the language it is written in is compassion. Vallalar’s own extensive writings, the Thiru Arutpa, serve not as a scripture to be worshipped, but as a lab manual documenting his experiments with truth.

Jeeva Karunyam: The Only Prerequisite

The entire foundation of Suddha Sanmargam rests on a single principle: Jeeva Karunyam. This is not simply a feeling of pity or sympathy. It is active, practical compassion toward all living beings. Vallalar taught that the divine grace-light cannot enter a being who causes suffering to others.

His text, Jeevakarunyam Ozhukkam, explains this in detail. The primary practice of Jeeva Karunyam is a plant-based diet. Vallalar taught that eating meat or causing harm to any creature for food creates a dense, impenetrable barrier to grace. The fear and pain of the animal at the moment of death are absorbed by the one who consumes it, making spiritual progress impossible. Jeeva Karunyam is the key that unlocks the door to every other spiritual attainment.

A person practicing Jeeva Karunyam might stop to move a snail from a busy path or put out a bowl of water for birds on a hot day. These small, outward acts quiet the mind and open the heart more effectively than hours of silent meditation, because they align the person with the universal compassion of Arut Perum Jyothi.

The Three Stages of Bodily Transformation

For Vallalar, spiritual evolution was a physical process. He documented a three-stage transformation of the human body into a vessel of light, a process fueled by compassion and the call to grace. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβ€”active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. The central practice for this transformation is the constant recitation of the Mahamantra:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to: β€œThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.”

The three stages he documented are:

  1. Suddha Deham (The Pure Body): This is the first stage, where the physical body is purified through a compassionate, plant-based diet and the repetition of the Mahamantra. The body becomes free of disease, resistant to decay, and filled with a natural lightness and clarity.

  2. Pranava Deham (The Primal Body): As the practice deepens, the physical body begins its transformation into a body of grace-light and sound. It becomes increasingly subtle, luminous, and no longer dependent on physical food. This stage is a profound shift in biology itself.

  3. Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body): The final stage, which Vallalar’s own life and writings document, is the complete dissolution of the physical form into a deathless body of pure grace-light and divine intelligence. This body is immortal and can appear and disappear at will. This state has contextual similarities to the Rainbow Body in Tibetan traditions, though the methods and theology are distinct.

One Concrete Action You Can Take Today

The path begins with a single step away from causing harm. Today, choose to eat one meal that is completely plant-based. In his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, Vallalar recommends simple foods like rice, lentils, bananas, or stem vegetables like brinjal (eggplant). Before eating, hold a moment of gratitude for the food that came without violence. This small act is the beginning of Jeeva Karunyam in practice.
