The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is ethical living guide. You are likely here because the usual answers about ethics feel incomplete. This article explains the three stages of bodily transformation Vallalar documentedβand how he claimed they are unlocked not by esoteric ritual, but by the simple, active protection of all life from suffering.
While many traditions treat nonviolence as an ethical precept for peace of mind, Vallalar connected it to a physiological outcome: the bodyβs transformation into a deathless form of light. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who claimed it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβthough he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that operates to this day, based on the principle that compassion for hunger is the highest form of worship.
On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
From Nonviolence to Active Compassion: What is Jeeva Karunyam?
Ahimsaβnonviolenceβis a foundational principle in many great spiritual traditions. It is often understood as a passive state: do not harm, do not kill, do not cause injury. Vallalar took this concept and made it active, dynamic, and the absolute center of his science of transformation.
For him, the core practice was Jeeva Karunyam, which translates to compassion for all souls. This is not just the absence of harm, but the active, urgent intervention to prevent or remove suffering wherever it is found. It is feeding the hungry person or animal, giving water to the thirsty, and protecting any being from fear or pain.
Vallalar taught that every soul (Jeeva) is a manifestation of the divine. Therefore, allowing a soul to sufferβespecially from hungerβis to allow the divine presence itself to be diminished. This active protection of life, he insisted, was not merely an ethical good. It was the primary fuel for a radical change within the human body.
How an ethical living guide Unlocks the Deathless Body
The most distinct claim in Vallalarβs teaching is the direct link between compassion and physiology. He asserted that the consistent practice of Jeeva Karunyam, particularly the feeding of the hungry, generates a sublime heat or energy within the body. This energy, born of compassion, begins a process of purifying and restructuring the physical form.
This is not a metaphor for a peaceful mind or a good life. Vallalar described a literal, scientific process where the gross physical body is refined into a substance of light. The suffering we prevent in the outer world directly prevents the decay and dissolution of our own inner worldβthe body itself.
Vallalar taught that none of the advanced techniques for this process can take root without Jeeva Karunyam. The daily practice of chanting the Mahamantra, for example, gains its power when grounded in a life of active compassion. The mantra is an invocation of the divine Grace-Light and its source in compassion:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
This practice, combined with a diet that causes no suffering to animals, creates the conditions for the body to begin its alchemical change.
In the Thiru Arutpa, Vallalar documented a three-stage transformation of the physical body. He presented this not as a miracle, but as a natural, repeatable science available to anyone who fully commits to the path of Jeeva Karunyam.
Suddha Deham: The Pure Body
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. Through a life of absolute compassion and a pure, plant-based diet as detailed in texts like the Nithya Karma Vidhi, the body is cleansed of all impurities. Vallalar taught that in this stage, the physical form becomes immune to disease, the aging process halts and reverses, and the need for sleep and excretion ceases. The body becomes light, radiant, and perpetually youthful, sustained directly by the divine grace-light.
The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the practice deepens, the body becomes even more refined. It takes on a form of subtle light, becoming translucent. Witnesses documented that Vallalarβs body in this stage cast no shadow. The Pranava Deham is described as being visible but not tangibleβit could pass through solid objects. It is a body made not of gross matter, but of a primal, subtle substance.
Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body
The final stage, which accounts from his life suggest Vallalar alone perfected, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. In this state, the transformation is complete. The body dissolves its form entirely and merges into the substance of the Vast Grace-Light (Arut Perum Jothi). It becomes omnipresent and eternal, a deathless body of pure consciousness and light. This is the ultimate aim of his Sanmarkkam (True Path), where the soul achieves its final state without the violent separation of death.
Is This Transformation Documented Elsewhere?
The idea of a body dissolving into light at the time of death appears in other traditions, most notably in the Dzogchen school of Tibetan Buddhism as the βRainbow Body.β Accounts describe advanced practitioners whose physical bodies shrink and disappear over several days, leaving only hair and nails.
What distinguishes Vallalarβs teaching is its explicit mechanism. He did not present the transformation as a mysterious siddhi or a byproduct of meditation alone. He defined it as the direct, predictable result of Jeeva Karunyam. For Vallalar, ethics were not a preparation for spiritual life; they were the very engine of physical immortality.
One Concrete Action to Begin Today
Today, consciously prevent one instance of suffering. This could be as simple as putting out a bowl of water for thirsty birds, feeding a stray animal, or choosing a plant-based meal to prevent the suffering of an animal raised for food. Perform the act without expectation. Afterwards, simply notice the feeling that follows this small, active protection of life. According to Vallalar, that feeling is the start of the science.
