The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is deathless body spiritual.
If you are searching for this, you are not asking a casual question. This search comes from a place of deep pain or a profound intuition that the cycle of birth, decay, and death cannot be the final word. It is a feeling that the body itself, this form we inhabit, was meant for something more than becoming dust. I want you to know that this feeling is real, and Vallalar dedicated his entire life to providing a scientific, verifiable answer to it.
His teaching is not a metaphor or a myth. It is a documented, step-by-step process for the physical transformation of the human body into an indestructible form of pure light. To understand why his claim carries such weight, we need to look at the man who demonstrated it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught a path of universal compassion and self-purification, open to people of any faith or background. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
What is a deathless body spiritual, according to Vallalar?
In most spiritual traditions, the body is seen as a temporary vessel, an obstacle to be overcome, or a cage from which the soul must escape. The goal is to transcend the physical and attain a spiritual state separate from it. Vallalarβs teaching is radically different. For him, the ultimate spiritual attainment was not to escape the body, but to transform it completely.
A deathless body is the literal, cellular transmutation of the gross physical form into a body of grace-light. It is not a poetic idea but a biological and spiritual process. This process makes the body immune to death, disease, and decay, turning it into an eternal expression of divine compassion. While the Tibetan tradition speaks of a βrainbow body,β where the physical form dissolves into light at the time of death, Vallalar documented a path to achieve this transformation while still living, making the body permanently incorruptible.
The Three-Stage Transformation into a Body of Light
Vallalar detailed the transformation in his magnum opus, Thiru Arutpa. He laid out three distinct, progressive stages of bodily transmutation. The foundation for this entire process, he insisted, was Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion toward all living beings, which begins with the refusal to cause them suffering for food.
The central practice for invoking the grace-light needed for this transformation is the constant recitation of the Mahamantra:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to: βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β Chanting this saturates the body and mind with the very substance of transformation.
Suddha Deham: The Pure Body
This is the first and most accessible stage. It is achieved through a life of absolute purity and compassion. The primary requirements are a strict plant-based diet, absolute truthfulness, sexual discipline, and selfless service. Vallalar taught that eating meat or even dairy products derived from animal suffering imprints the vibrations of fear and death into the cells, making transformation impossible.
As the body is purified through these practices and the chanting of the Mahamantra, it becomes the Suddha Deham. It is free from disease, the aging process dramatically slows, and it emits a subtle, natural radiance. It becomes a perfect, clean vessel, ready for the next stage of transmutation.
As the practitioner deepens in compassion and devotion to the Vast Grace-Light, the Suddha Deham evolves into the Pranava Deham. Pranava refers to the primal sound or vibration of creation. At this stage, the body becomes subtler, less dense, and is composed more of light and sound than of gross matter.
The physical form may appear translucent. It no longer depends on conventional food for sustenance and is not bound by ordinary physical laws. This is the body of a true Siddha, a perfected being. Though such a body is capable of what others would call miracles, Vallalar taught that the focus must remain on compassion and the surrender to grace-light, not on the acquisition of powers.
Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body
This is the final and ultimate state, which Vallalar himself is documented to have achieved. The Pranava Deham dissolves completely into its source: the Vast Grace-Light, or Arut Perum Jothi. The body becomes a formless, eternal body of pure wisdom and compassion. It is indestructible, omnipresent, and can appear in any form anywhere, at will, to serve living beings. This is not the annihilation of the self but its infinite expansion. It is the complete and total conquest of death, not by escaping the body, but by perfecting it into divinity.
One Concrete Step Toward a Pure Body Today
This path may seem vast, but it begins with a single, conscious choice. Vallalarβs text on daily conduct, the Nithya Karma Vidhi, emphasizes that purification starts with what you put into your body.
For your very next meal, choose not to consume meat, fish, or eggs. Prepare a simple, plant-based meal β rice, lentils, and cooked vegetables like brinjal (eggplant) or drumstick (Moringa) are excellent choices he recommended. Before you eat, take a moment to reflect that this food was obtained without causing fear or violence to any living creature. This one act of compassion is the first, foundational step in building a Suddha Deham. It is the beginning of the science of the deathless body.
