The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is compassionate saints. This article explains the three stages of bodily transformation that Vallalar documentedβand how he taught that active compassion was the key that unlocked them. It can be a difficult teaching to accept at first, because it sounds so far outside what we believe is possible. While many spiritual traditions teach compassion as a virtue, Vallalar presented it as a physical science with a direct, observable outcome: the bodyβs transformation into a deathless, divine form. To understand his claim, we must first look at the man who made it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβthough he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He demonstrated a mastery over the physical elements and his own body that was documented by many witnesses, including those in the British colonial government. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
What Makes Compassionate Saints Different in Vallalarβs Teaching?
Ahimsaβnonviolenceβis a foundational principle in many great spiritual traditions. For most, it is an ethical guideline for creating a peaceful mind and a harmonious society. But Vallalar connected this principle to something more specific and far more radical. For him, nonviolence was not a passive refusal to harm. It was Jeeva Karunyam in practice: the active, constant protection of every living soul from suffering.
This is not simply about being a good person. Vallalar taught that every living being, from the smallest insect to the largest animal, possesses a soul that is a spark of the one divine light. When we witness or cause suffering, we are obscuring that light in another and, by extension, in ourselves. Jeeva Karunyam is the conscious, moment-to-moment work of removing that suffering wherever we find it.
This practice begins with the most immediate and controllable action: what we eat. Vallalar was uncompromising in his teaching that a plant-based diet was essential. He explained that the fear and pain an animal experiences at the time of its death become part of the food, creating a dense, heavy quality in the body of the person who consumes it. This density, he taught, is a direct physical barrier to the divine grace-light that is trying to enter and transform the body.
A person practicing this might find themselves stopping to move an earthworm from a hot pavement to cool soil. It is not a grand gesture, but a small, direct act of preventing suffering. Vallalar taught that the inner state of peace that follows such an act is not just a feeling, but a physical reality beginning to take hold in the body.
Jeeva Karunyam: The Science of Bodily Transformation
This is where Vallalarβs teaching diverges from all others. He made a claim no other teacher made so explicitly: that the practice of Jeeva Karunyam, taken to its fullness, opens the physical body itself to divine transformation. He insisted this was not a metaphor or a mystical state of mind. It was a biological process that removes aging, disease, and ultimately, death.
According to his teachings in texts like the Nithya Karma Vidhi (Rules for Daily Action), the constant practice of compassion purifies the physical elements of the body. The mind, freed from the agitation caused by harming other life, becomes clear and stable. This inner stability allows a divine energy, which he called Arut Perum JΕti or the Vast Grace-Light, to descend and begin restructuring the body at a cellular level.
Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. To support this process, he gave a central mantra for daily recitation. The sound itself is said to invoke the Grace-Light and accelerate the bodyβs purification:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light. Reciting this, while living a life dedicated to preventing suffering, was the core of his practical path.
The Three Stages of the Deathless Body
Vallalar documented a precise, three-stage process of this bodily transformation in his poetic work, the Thiru Arutpa. While other traditions, such as Tibetan Buddhism with its concept of the Rainbow Body, speak of the dissolution of the physical form at death, Vallalar described a transformation of the living body into a permanent, divine substance.
1. Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)
This first stage is achieved through the unwavering practice of Jeeva Karunyam, a pure plant-based diet, and devotion. In this state, the body is purified of all gross impurities. Vallalar taught that the physical form becomes immune to disease, fatigue, and the effects of aging. The skin takes on a youthful glow, and the mind becomes exceptionally clear and peaceful. This is the foundation upon which the later transformations are built. It is a state of perfect physical and mental health, maintained by a life of complete non-harming.
As the practitioner continues, the Vast Grace-Light works a deeper change. The Suddha Deham evolves into the Pranava Deham, often translated as the Primal Body or Body of Grace. At this stage, the physical form is no longer made of the five gross elements but is transformed into a substance of pure light and sound. Witnesses described Vallalarβs own body as having no shadow and being almost translucent. This body is not subject to physical laws like gravity or the need for conventional food. It is visible but ethereal, capable of appearing and disappearing at will.
3. Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)
This final stage is the complete merger of the individual soul and its transformed body with the Vast Grace-Light. The Gnana Deham is a body of pure wisdom, a permanent, deathless form of divine consciousness. It is form and formlessness at once. The Thiru Arutpa and accounts from those who knew him suggest that Vallalar achieved this state, culminating in his final disappearance. This ultimate stage is presented as the destination he documented, a complete victory over the limitations of physical existence.
Begin with Your Next Meal
Vallalarβs path from ordinary human to a deathless saint begins not with complex meditation, but with a simple, concrete choice. The practice of Jeeva Karunyam starts on your plate.
Today, you can take the first step by replacing one animal-based meal with a plant-based option. Vallalarβs own guide, the Nithya Karma Vidhi, recommends simple, sattvic foods that purify the body and mind. Choose a meal of rice, lentils, or easily digested vegetables like brinjal (eggplant) or drumstick (Moringa). Before you eat, take a moment to acknowledge that this meal caused no suffering to any living being. This is the first step in the science of compassion.
