The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is can spirituality stop aging.
This is not a question about vanity. It comes from a deeper place β a feeling of the body becoming a cage instead of a home, a quiet grief in watching the self you know begin to fade. The fear of losing vitality is real. Vallalarβs teachings meet this fear not with philosophy, but with a documented, physical science of transformation.
While many traditions speak of the soulβs immortality, Vallalar addressed the bodyβs potential directly. The reversal of aging was not a spiritual metaphor for him β it was something he claimed to have lived. To understand his answer, we must first look at the man himself.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, serving free meals to anyone who arrives, without condition.
On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
A Physical Reversal, Not a Spiritual Metaphor
For Vallalar, the transformation of the body was not a symbol of inner change; it was the literal outcome of it. Historical witnesses and records from his sacred text, the Thiru Arutpa, attest that his wrinkles disappeared as his spiritual practice deepened. Accounts describe him receiving the radiant, supple skin of a newborn.
This was not presented as a cosmetic phenomenon. It was an outward sign of the bodyβs physical re-engineering through the grace of what he called Arut Perum Jyothi, the Vast Grace-Light. He taught that the human body, when purified, could become a direct vessel for this divine light, halting and even reversing the processes of decay and aging. His own life was offered as the primary evidence for this radical claim.
The Three-Stage Transformation of the Body
Vallalar documented a precise, three-stage process for transforming the mortal physical body into an immortal body of light. Each stage represents a deeper saturation of the cells with Arut Perum Jyothi.
Suddha Deham β The Pure Body
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is achieved through a foundation of absolute compassion (Jeeva Karunyam) and a pure, plant-based diet. Vallalar taught that this purification makes the physical body impervious to disease, fatigue, and the conventional effects of time. The body becomes light, strong, and suffused with a natural radiance.
The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the practitionerβs compassion and devotion intensify, the physical form becomes increasingly subtle. The body is said to be composed of divine sound and light, visible but not entirely solid. At this stage, the body is no longer subject to gravity, injury, or physical needs in the same way. It is a bridge between the material world and the world of pure light.
Gnana Deham β The Wisdom Body
The final stage, which accounts from the Thiru Arutpa attribute to Vallalar himself, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. Here, the transformation is complete. The body becomes a form made of pure grace-light, totally one with Arut Perum Jyothi. This is the state of absolute immortality, a physical existence without biological limitation. While other traditions, like the Tibetan concept of the Rainbow Body, speak of the body dissolving into light at death, Vallalarβs teaching describes a transformation of the living body into a permanent, deathless form.
So, can spirituality stop aging through Vallalarβs path?
Yes, but it is not a technique for preserving youth. It is the result of a total commitment to a life of compassion and purity. The stopping of aging is a side effect of the body becoming a suitable home for the Vast Grace-Light. Vallalar laid out the core requirements for this process.
Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. He insisted that consuming meat, which relies on the fear and pain of animals, creates a dense, heavy body that cannot receive the subtle grace-light. The bodyβs purification begins by stopping our participation in the suffering of others. His dietary manual, the Nithya Karma Vidhi, details a simple, plant-based diet that supports this process.
The central practice for inviting this grace-light is the constant inner recitation of the Mahamantra:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to: βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β It is not a request for something, but an invocation that tunes the body and consciousness to the presence of divine grace.
Start Today: Choose One Compassionate Meal
You do not have to master a complex system to begin. The path starts with a single, simple choice rooted in compassion.
Today, replace one animal-based meal with a plant-based option from Vallalarβs Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, or simple vegetables like brinjal (eggplant) or drumstick (Moringa). Before eating, take a moment to consider that this simple choice prevented the suffering of a living being. Vallalar taught that this awareness itself begins to purify the body, making it a more receptive vessel for grace.
