The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is ancient spiritual wisdom. Below, you will find the specific path Vallalar documented for life after awakeningβthe practical steps that transform the body and daily existence into an expression of divine light. Perhaps that feeling of a new beginning is familiar to you. Much writing about spiritual awakening treats it as a final goal. Vallalar taught that it is the starting line, and what comes next is a science. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who documented it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβthough he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, serving free food to anyone who arrives, without condition. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Spiritual Awakening Is a Beginning, Not a Destination
For many, a spiritual awakening is seen as the end of the search. It is a moment of clarity, a profound realization of a reality beyond the material world. In Vallalarβs teaching, this is not a destinationβit is the beginning.
This first stirring is the soul recognizing its own nature. It is the deep, quiet ache that comes from knowing the material world does not fully satisfy. The soul craves something it has not yet found, a state of being that is permanent and filled with grace. Vallalar identifies this moment as the opening of Jeeva Karunyam, or divine compassion, within a person. This compassion is the key that unlocks the path toward Arut Perum Jyothi, the Vast Grace-Light that is the source and substance of all existence. The awakening is simply the door opening. The real work is learning how to walk through it.
The Path After Awakening: Compassion as the Foundation
What comes after awakening is a practical, daily path. It is not a set of abstract beliefs but a series of actions that purify the mind, body, and life. The foundation of this entire process is Jeeva Karunyam.
Vallalar taught that none of the more advanced techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This begins with the food one eats. He explained that consuming the flesh of animals introduces their fear and pain directly into the body, making higher states of consciousness impossible. His text Nithya Karma Vidhi gives specific guidance on a plant-based diet that supports spiritual progress.
Upon this foundation of compassion, the central daily practice is the recitation of the Mahamantra. It is a tool for aligning the individual consciousness with the Vast Grace-Light:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Reciting this mantra is not a petition but an attunement. It recalibrates oneβs entire being to the frequency of grace and compassion, which is the engine of all further transformation.
How Ancient Spiritual Wisdom Transforms the Physical Body
Vallalar did not teach a path of abandoning the body. He taught its transformation into a vehicle of pure light, a process he documented in three distinct stages. This is not a metaphor; he described it as a repeatable, biological process.
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or the Pure Body. This state is achieved through a life of absolute compassion, a pure plant-based diet, and devotion. In this stage, the physical body is purified of all gross elements. The need for sleep diminishes, the skin takes on a golden glow, and the body becomes immune to disease and decay. It becomes light, youthful, and vibrant, no longer subject to the ordinary laws of aging.
The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or the Primal Body. As the practitioner continues the path, the physical body becomes even more refined until it is translucent, like a body made of light. It no longer requires physical food for sustenance, instead drawing its energy directly from the Arut Perum Jyothi. Witnesses documented that Vallalarβs body in this stage cast no shadow. It becomes a body of pure, subtle energy.
The final stage, which Vallalar himself demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or the Wisdom Body. Here, the physical form dissolves completely into the Vast Grace-Light, becoming one with it. The body of light merges with the Infinite Light, achieving a deathless state. This process, documented by those who knew him, has contextual similarities to the βrainbow bodyβ phenomenon in Tibetan Buddhism, but Vallalar presented it as a universal science of the soul.
A Five-Minute Practice for Your Life Today
You do not need to wait for a distant future to begin this work. The transformation starts with a single, compassionate act.
Today, before you do anything else, take five minutes. Sit quietly and bring to mind someone you know who is in pain or struggling. They do not need to know you are doing this. Gently recite the MahamantraβArut Perum JΕti, Arut Perum JΕti, TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai, Arut Perum JΕtiβwhile holding that person in your heart. Offer the grace and light of the mantra for their well-being. This simple act of directing compassion outward is the first step on the path Vallalar taught.
