Achieved Everything Still Unhappy: Vallalar’s Answer

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is achieved everything still unhappy. This feeling is not a minor dissatisfaction. It is a deep, quiet ache that success was supposed to cure but did not. You have followed the map of worldly life perfectly, only to find yourself in the wrong destination. That is a heavy and confusing place to be. Much writing about this feeling offers psychological fixes or philosophical reframes. Vallalar offered a biological and spiritual transformation. To understand his answer, we first need to look at the man who lived it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Portrait of Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats โ€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that has operated continuously for over 150 years, serving food to anyone, regardless of caste or creed, without ever ceasing. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again โ€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

Why Youโ€™ve Achieved Everything Still Unhappy: The Soulโ€™s Purpose

When every worldly goal has been metโ€”a good family, financial security, stable healthโ€”and a profound emptiness remains, that is not a sign of ingratitude. It is not a failure of character or a psychological flaw.

Vallalar taught that this feeling is the soul announcing its own agenda. It is the soul making it clear that it has not yet received what it came here to this earth to get. The houses, the money, the respect, and the relationships are all provisions for the path, but they are not the destination. The ache you feel is the soulโ€™s honest report that the true work has not yet begun.

This is a critical moment, not a crisis. It is the point where the search for external validation ends and the path toward an internal, permanent fulfillment can finally begin. The feeling of unhappiness despite success is the starting gate.

The Destination No Worldly Success Can Replicate

So, what did the soul come here for? Vallalarโ€™s answer is radically different from most spiritual traditions. The goal is not a reward in a distant heaven after death. It is the complete transformation of this very body, here on this earth, into a perfect, blissful form of light.

He called this destination a state of permanent union with Arut Perum Jyothiโ€”the Vast Grace-Light, which he identified as the ultimate, compassionate intelligence of the universe. This is not an abstract concept. It is a tangible, physical state where the body itself becomes free from the limitations of ego, maya (the illusion of separation), and karma (the cycle of action and consequence).

No worldly achievement can touch this state. No amount of money can buy it, and no amount of fame can replicate its inherent peace. It is the only fulfillment that, once attained, can never be lost. It is the only success that the soul recognizes as its own.

The Three-Body Transformation to a Blissful State

Vallalar did not just describe the destination; he documented the scientific process for reaching it. He taught that this transformation occurs in three distinct, observable stages. Foundational to this entire process is the practice of Jeeva Karunyamโ€”active, unconditional compassion toward all living beings. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without a heart that actively works to prevent suffering in other living beings.

The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or the Pure Body. This is achieved through a specific plant-based diet, compassionate living, and devotion. In this stage, the physical body is purified of all gross impurities and becomes immune to disease, decay, and the need for sleep. Its physical needs become minimal.

The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or the Primal Body. As the practice deepens, the physical body becomes increasingly subtle, appearing younger and more radiant. It becomes translucent, casting no shadow, and is no longer bound by the same physical laws as an ordinary human body. This form is often compared to the rainbow body described in some Tibetan traditions, where the physical form dissolves into light.

The final stage, which witness accounts attribute only to Vallalar himself, is the Gnana Deham, or the Wisdom Body. This is the complete and irreversible merging of the physical form with the Vast Grace-Light. The body becomes a pure, deathless form of divine light, eternally blissful and conscious, existing everywhere at once. This was the state Vallalar demonstrated before his final disappearance.

A Practice for the Soulโ€™s Hunger

For the mind that is agitated and the heart that feels empty, Vallalar gave a central practice to reorient the entire being toward the Grace-Light. This is the Mahamantra, a simple recitation that invokes the very power that fuels the transformation.

Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ€” Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ€”
Taแน‡i Perum Karuแน‡ai โ€” Aruแนญ Perum Jลti

The translation is:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

Repeating this mantra, aloud or silently, is not a request for something. It is an act of tuning the body and consciousness to the frequency of grace and compassion. It is a direct address to the source of fulfillment that the soul is searching for.

A person feeling that familiar ache of emptiness despite a successful day might sit quietly for five minutes before bed and repeat this mantra. Instead of focusing on their own lack, they direct the feeling of compassion outward, perhaps toward a struggling colleague or a sick pet. They may notice that the act of invoking compassion for another subtly lessens the weight of their own inner void.

One Concrete Action to Take Today

The path Vallalar described begins with a single, simple step away from causing harm and toward creating ease for others. This is the core of Jeeva Karunyam.

Today, find one living being that is strugglingโ€”a person in your life, a stray animal, or even a wilting plant in your home. Do one small, direct thing to ease its suffering. Offer a glass of water, a kind word, a moment of protection, or a simple meal. Do it without expecting anything in return. Pay attention to how this small, outward act of compassion quiets the noise inside you, even for just a moment. This is the first step of the science.
