This is one of the hardest questions a person can ask. Philosophers call it the problem of evil, but usually it is asked in pain, not in theory. Vallalar did not give a tidy answer. What he taught is that God is not the one who sends the suffering. Through it, God calls the soul toward compassion and toward Him.
If you are asking because something terrible has happened to you or to someone you love, we are sorry. The question deserves more than a formula.
Where suffering comes from
Beings have free will, and free will means we can hurt one another. Much of the worldβs pain is done by people and other beings to others. Some comes from illness, age and death, which Vallalar (Ramalinga Adigal, 1823β1874) saw as limits of the body that are not Godβs final will for us.
What he did not teach is that every pain is a punishment someone deserves. Good people suffer. He saw it every day among the poor of Tamil Nadu and wept for it. He spoke of the fruits of past deeds, but never to blame the one who suffers. Where he met suffering, his answer was to relieve it.
God calls through suffering
In Vallalarβs teaching, God is Arut Perum Jyoti, the Vast Grace Light, and Thani Perum Karunai, the Unique Great Compassion. A God who is compassion itself does not delight in pain. But pain breaks open what comfort keeps closed. In the worst moments many people find themselves reaching for God for the first time. Vallalar understood that reaching as the Grace Light at work.
Compassion is the answer we can give
He did not leave the question at the level of explanation. His answer was to act. In 1867 he opened a kitchen in Vadalur that fed anyone who was hungry, and it still does, every day. He taught that compassion for every living being, Jeeva Karunyam, is the key to Godβs grace. It eases suffering in the world, and it changes the one who practises it.
So the question βwhy does God allow this?β turns, in his path, into a second one: βwhat can I do about this suffering in front of me?β His prose work on compassion, Jeeva Karunya Ozhukkam, is free to read.
If you are suffering now
You do not need to understand why before you can be comforted. Say the Mahamantra slowly, for yourself and for others who are suffering tonight:
Arut Perum Jyoti, Arut Perum Jyoti, Thani Perum Karunai, Arut Perum Jyoti.
(The Vast Grace Light, the Vast Grace Light, the Unique Great Compassion, the Vast Grace Light.)
And tell someone what you are carrying. If grief or pain has become too heavy, a doctor, counsellor or helpline can help.
Questions people ask
Is suffering a punishment from God?
Not in Vallalarβs teaching. God is compassion. Suffering comes from harm done by beings with free will and from the limits of the body.
Why do good people suffer more?
It can look that way, especially because good people feel othersβ pain more. Vallalar saw sensitivity to suffering as a sign of a heart opening, not of being punished.
If God is real, why is there evil?
Because beings are free, and freedom can be used to harm. Vallalarβs response was less an argument than a life: feed the hungry and stop causing harm.
How can I trust God when I am suffering?
You donβt have to force trust. Keep calling, even with doubt. Vallalarβs own songs record long seasons of feeling unheard.
