How to Find Inner Peace That Lasts

Most of us look for peace by trying to get away from trouble: a holiday, a quiet room, an end to the argument. That peace is real, but it breaks the next time trouble comes. Vallalar pointed to a different kind, one that stays through trouble, and he said where it grows from: compassion for every living being.

He called it Jeeva Karunyam. When we stop causing suffering and start easing it, the restlessness that most of us take as normal begins to settle. Peace is what is left.

Why the mind is not at peace

Watch your mind for one hour. Much of its noise is about ourselves: what we want, what we fear losing, who has wronged us. Vallalar (Ramalinga Adigal, 1823–1874) saw this turning-inward as the root of the trouble. A heart closed around itself is never still, because it is always defending something.

Part of the noise also comes from what we take in. He paid close attention to food. Food that comes from the killing of an animal carries that suffering, he taught, and it disturbs the one who eats it. Our page on how to stop negative thoughts says more about this.

Compassion is where peace comes from

Each time you ease another’s hunger or pain, attention leaves the small circle of your own worries for a moment. Do it daily and the moments join up. Vallalar did not offer this as a technique. He built his life on it. In 1867 he opened a kitchen in Vadalur that fed anyone who came, of any caste or creed, and it has fed people every day since.

His own short work on this, Jeeva Karunya Ozhukkam (β€œThe Discipline of Compassion for Living Beings”), is free to read on our site.

A tool for the hard moments

Compassion grows slowly. For the moment when the mind is racing, Vallalar gave the Mahamantra:

Arut Perum Jyoti, Arut Perum Jyoti, Thani Perum Karunai, Arut Perum Jyoti.

(The Vast Grace Light, the Vast Grace Light, the Unique Great Compassion, the Vast Grace Light.)

Say it slowly, aloud or silently, until the wave passes. It turns attention from the worry to the Grace Light, Arut Perum Jyoti, which Vallalar knew as the one God, open to everyone. Our page on how to pray shows how to make it a daily practice.

Then look at the plate

The second step is the food on your plate. A simple plant-based diet takes out one daily source of harm, to others and to the mind. Begin with one meal a day and notice whether you feel lighter afterwards.

What peace is not

Inner peace is not feeling nothing, and it is not giving up on the world. People who live this way often feel others’ pain more, not less. The difference is that it no longer throws them. Vallalar wrote that he withered whenever he saw a crop withering, and he was one of the most peaceful people of his time.

Questions people ask

How do I find peace within myself when life is hard?

Start outside yourself. Ease one being’s hunger or pain today. It sounds backwards, but peace that depends on our own circumstances never lasts; peace that comes from caring for others does.

Can I have inner peace without religion?

Yes. Vallalar’s path is open to every human being, of any faith or none. Compassion needs no membership.

How long does it take?

The Mahamantra can calm a single moment. A settled heart comes over months of daily compassion.

Is inner peace the same as happiness?

Not quite. Happiness rises and falls with events. Peace is the ground under them, and it can hold even on a sad day.

How do I make peace with myself after mistakes?

Stop the harm, make amends where you can, and turn your care to others. Vallalar’s path asks for change, not endless guilt.
