Compassionate Living Guide: Vallalar’s Path to Immortality

Compassionate

Every soul needs to be compassionate and feel compassion. Many soul feels lost trying to alignment with this feeling. Here, vallarlar provides a specific answer which is “compassionate living guide“.

Below, you will learn the specific practice Vallalar taught that connects compassion not just to peace of mind, but to the physical removal of aging, disease, and death. It feels like a radical claim because it is. While many traditions teach nonviolence as a high ethical principle, Vallalar connected it directly to the very cells of the body.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Portrait of Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats — though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. Vallalar established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, serving free meals to anyone who arrives, without condition. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again, his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin

Beyond Nonviolence: The Science of Jeeva Karunyam

Ahimsa, nonviolence is a foundation to most great spiritual traditions. For Vallalar, however, this was only the starting point. He taught that a passive refusal to harm is incomplete. The real work is Jeeva Karunyam; active, intelligent compassion that seeks to protect every living soul from suffering.

This isn’t just an ethical rule; he described it as a natural law. According to Vallalar, the divine expresses itself as compassion. To practice Jeeva Karunyam is to align oneself with the fundamental nature of existence. This practice extends beyond physical acts. It involves refusing to cause mental or emotional pain and actively working to alleviate the suffering one sees in the world, whether in humans or animals. This active protection of life, he taught, is the key that opens the door to all further spiritual development.

How Compassion Rewires the Body: A Practical compassionate living guide

Vallalar made a claim no other teacher made so explicitly: that the practice of Jeeva Karunyam, taken to its fullness, opens the body itself to divine transformation. He taught that the physical body as we know it is subject to disease, aging, and death is a result of accumulated impurities. The primary source of these impurities, he stated, is the consumption of meat.

His reasoning was direct. When an animal is killed, its terror and pain are imprinted on its flesh. Consuming that flesh introduces the vibration of suffering directly into the human body, making it dense, heavy, and mortal. A compassionate diet, free from all animal products, is the first step in purification. This is detailed in his work, the Nithya Karma Vidhi.

But diet alone is not enough. The inner state must be purified through the constant practice of compassion and the recitation of the Mahamantra, which attunes the practitioner to the divine grace-light. Vallalar taught that this combination gradually replaces the body’s dense, suffering-based substance with a substance of pure light. The central daily practice for this is the recitation of:

Aruṭ Perum Jōti. Aruṭ Perum Jōti. Taṇi Perum Karuṇai. Aruṭ Perum Jōti

The translation is:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

The Three Stages of Divine Transformation

Vallalar documented a three-stage process of physical transformation, fueled by Jeeva Karunyam. He presented this not as a metaphor, but as a repeatable, scientific outcome of a specific way of living.

Suddha Deham: The Pure Body

The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. Through a consistent practice of Jeeva Karunyam, a pure plant-based diet, and devotion, the physical body is cleansed of all impurities. It becomes immune to disease, fatigue, and the conventional effects of aging. The skin glows, the mind becomes clear, and the need for sleep is greatly reduced. This is the foundation upon which the later transformations are built.

Pranava Deham: The Primal Body

The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the purification continues, the physical form becomes increasingly subtle and luminous. The body, now composed of a finer substance, is no longer fully dependent on physical food or water. Witnesses documented that Vallalar’s own body in this stage cast no shadow. It becomes a body of sound and light, perceptible but not entirely solid in the way a normal body is.

Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body

The final stage, which Vallalar’s own life demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. Here, the physical structure fully dissolves into Arut Perum Jothi, the Vast Grace-Light. The individual consciousness merges completely with the divine, and the body becomes a permanent, deathless form of pure light.

This outcome bears a surface resemblance to the Rainbow Body documented in some Tibetan traditions, but Vallalar’s path to it through Jeeva Karunyam is distinct. It is also different from concepts like the Merkaba, which is often described as a vehicle for consciousness, rather than a total transformation of the physical form itself.

One Concrete Action to Start Today

The path Vallalar described begins with a single, simple choice. Today, replace one animal-based meal with a plant-based option. Choose something from Vallalar’s own recommendations in the Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, bananas, or vegetables like brinjal (eggplant) and drumstick (Moringa). As you eat, consider that this choice prevents a moment of suffering for another living being. This is the first step of Jeeva Karunyam in practice.
