Awakening Soul Through the lens of compassion: The Path of Embodiment

Awakening

Dear soul, it’s known that most people have wondered what the experience of the awakening soul feels like but many feel unsure of what this awakening means on their day to day lives.

This article explains the practical path that follows that first inner stirring; a path of compassion and physical transformation documented in his writings. That feeling that there must be something more is not an illusion; it is a beginning. Much writing on spiritual awakening treats it as a destination. Vallalar taught that it is the starting line.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats—though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a centre for feeding the poor that has operated without interruption for over 150 years, serving food to anyone regardless of caste or creed. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again—his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

What Is the True Awakening Soul Meaning According to Vallalar?

In Vallalar’s teaching, spiritual awakening is not a final achievement. It is the beginning of the real work. The awakening of the soul is the simple, profound recognition that the material world does not fully satisfy. It is the moment the soul craves something it has not yet found, a persistent inner ache for a deeper truth.

This initial stirring is not an abstract event. Vallalar identifies it as the first opening of Jeeva Karunyam, or compassion for all living beings. When you begin to feel the connection of life and sense that your own peace is tied to the well-being of others, your soul has awakened. This impulse is the doorway to the path of Arut Perum Jyothi, the Vast Grace-Light that he described as the ultimate reality. The awakening is the invitation; the path is the response.

The Path After Awakening: Compassion and the Maha-mantra

What comes after this initial recognition, the path to an awakening soul is a practical, daily transformation. Vallalar did not teach complex meditations or secret rituals. He taught a path grounded in two core practices that purify the mind, body, and soul, preparing them for the reception of grace.

The foundation of this path is Jeeva Karunyam. This is not passive sympathy but active compassion. It is the conscious choice to prevent suffering in other living beings. Vallalar taught that the single greatest obstacle to spiritual progress is causing harm to other creatures, particularly for food. His text, Nithya Karma Vidhi, outlines a pure plant-based diet, arguing that the fear and pain of animals consumed by humans becomes a dense, dark energy in the body, blocking the soul’s light.

The second practice is the recitation of the Maha-mantra. This mantra attunes the entire being to the frequency of the Vast Grace-Light. It is a tool for purification and a call for divine grace. The mantra is:

Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Taṇi Perum Karuṇai — Aruṭ Perum Jōti

This translates to:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

Vallalar taught that regular, heartfelt recitation of this mantra, combined with a life of active compassion, begins to physically transform the body.

The Three Stages of the Body’s Divine Transformation

For Vallalar, the ultimate destination of the soul was not an escape from the body but its complete divinization. He documented a three-stage process of physical transformation, moving from a mortal body to a deathless body of light.

First is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This stage is achieved through consistent practice of Jeeva Karunyam and a compassionate, plant-based diet. The physical body is purified of all impurities, becoming free from disease, waste, and the effects of aging. It becomes radiant and light.

Next is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the practitioner deepens their connection to Arut Perum Jyothi, the physical form becomes subtler. Accounts suggest this body appears younger, is almost translucent, and is no longer bound by conventional physical laws like gravity or the need for sleep. It becomes a body of pure sound and light.

The final stage, which Vallalar’s own life demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. Here, the physical form is completely transformed into the Vast Grace-Light itself. This is the deathless body, a state of physical immortality where the body merges entirely with the divine. This concept has parallels in other traditions, such as the Tibetan Rainbow Body, though Vallalar’s science provides a distinct and detailed path.

One Act of Compassion to Begin Today

The path to the deathless body begins with a single, simple step. Before your next meal, consciously offer food and water to another living being. It can be a bird in your garden, a stray animal, or a person in need. Do this small act of preventing hunger or thirst before you satisfy your own. This is Jeeva Karunyam in its most basic form. Notice the quiet shift inside you after this small act. That feeling is the start of the path.
