The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is can a human become immortal. Below, you will find the three-stage body transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpa β and what each stage actually requires for an individual practitioner. Much writing about immortality stays at the level of myth or abstract concept. Vallalar presented it as a practical science, available to anyone willing to do the work.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught that the ultimate expression of this science was the transformation of the physical body into a deathless body of light. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
The Only Foundation for a Deathless Body
Before any technique or stage, Vallalar established one non-negotiable foundation: Jeeva Karunyam. This term translates to compassion for all living beings. He was clear that without this active, daily practice, any attempt at bodily transformation would fail.
For Vallalar, compassion was not a passive feeling of goodwill. It was the active prevention of suffering. He taught that the greatest suffering humans inflict is on other creatures for food. Therefore, the cornerstone of Jeeva Karunyam is a plant-based diet. He detailed this in his text, Nithya Karma Vidhi, explaining that the fear, pain, and death of an animal become part of the person who consumes it, making the body dense and susceptible to decay.
Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. It is the soil in which the seed of a deathless body can grow. He rejected the idea that special birth, caste, or status mattered. Sincere compassion was the only entry requirement.
So, can a human become immortal? Vallalarβs Three-Stage Transformation
Vallalarβs answer was an unambiguous yes. He documented a three-stage process where the physical body is systematically refined until it becomes a permanent form of divine light. This was not a metaphor. He described it as a biological and spiritual process, powered by the recitation of a specific Mahamantra and fueled by the grace of the divine, which he called Arut Perum Jothi.
The central practice for this transformation is the constant inner and outer recitation of the Mahamantra. It is the engine that drives the alchemical change in the cells of the body.

TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Through this practice, combined with Jeeva Karunyam, an individual practitioner could, according to Vallalar, begin the step-by-step conversion of the physical body.
Stage One: The Suddha Deham (Pure Body)
The first transformation is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. At this stage, the practitionerβs physical form is perfected by compassion, a pure plant-based diet, and the presence of the Grace-Light. The body ceases to produce waste in the ordinary sense. It becomes immune to disease, fatigue, and the aging process.
For an individual, this would mean a state of perfect health and vitality, independent of external conditions. The body would appear youthful and radiant, no longer subject to the normal laws of decay. Vallalar taught that this state was attainable by any sincere person who followed the path with discipline.
The next evolution is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. The physical form, already perfected, now becomes subtle and luminous. It is composed of light and sound. Those who witnessed Vallalar in his later years reported that his body cast no shadow and that they could see through it in certain kinds of light.
In this stage, the body is no longer fully solid. It is not bound by gravity or physical obstacles in the same way. It can appear and disappear, and it becomes a conduit for divine intelligence. While a highly advanced state, Vallalar presented this as a natural progression from the Suddha Deham, a further refinement of the physical into the spiritual.
Stage Three: The Gnana Deham (Wisdom Body)
The final stage, which Vallalar himself demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. Here, the transformation is complete. The body merges entirely with the Vast Grace-Light, becoming a deathless, eternal form of pure consciousness and light. It is no longer a body in any recognizable sense but is the divine itself, capable of being everywhere at once.
This complete dematerialization of the physical form into light is an event documented in other traditions, such as the βrainbow bodyβ in Tibetan Buddhism, but Vallalarβs account is distinct in its scientific framing. He did not present this as a miracle but as the ultimate, logical outcome of his spiritual science β the full realization that the body and the divine are one. The historical accounts of his final disappearance in 1874 stand as the primary evidence for his claim.
A Concrete First Step Today
The path to a deathless body does not begin with esoteric practice but with a simple, tangible act of compassion. Vallalarβs Nithya Karma Vidhi provides clear guidance on diet. The first step is to reduce and eliminate harm to other living beings.
Today, replace one meal that contains meat with a plant-based option. Choose simple, sattvic foods like rice, lentils, cooked vegetables, or fruits. This is not just a dietary choice; it is the foundational act of Jeeva Karunyam. It is the first step in purifying the body and making it a suitable vessel for the Grace-Light.
