The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is why killing animals is wrong spiritually.
If you are asking this question, it is likely coming from a place of real sensitivity. It is not an abstract debate. It is a feeling of dissonance, a quiet but persistent ache that something is fundamentally misaligned when one beingโs life is taken for anotherโs meal. You are feeling the weight of a system that normalises violence, and that weight can be heavy. To understand the answer, we must first meet the teacher who addressed this feeling not as a matter of ethics, but as a matter of spiritual science.
While many traditions teach nonviolence as a virtue, Vallalar connected it to something more specific and profound: the physical transformation of the human body into a vessel of light. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who claimed it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsโthough he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. Vallalar established a centre for feeding the poor that still operates today, serving free meals to all, and taught a path of universal compassion called the Suddha Sanmarkkam, or the โTrue Path.โ On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againโhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
The Mahamantra: A Practice for Cultivating Compassion
Before understanding the science, Vallalar gave a simple practice to cultivate the necessary inner state. He offered a Mahamantra, or Great Mantra, not for personal gain, but to attune the individual to the source of all compassion and grace.
The mantra is:
Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ Aruแนญ Perum Jลti โ
Taแนi Perum Karuแนai โ Aruแนญ Perum Jลti
Its meaning translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Reciting these words, even quietly for a few minutes, begins to shift oneโs focus from personal suffering to the universal compassion that Vallalar identified as the engine of all spiritual progress. It is the foundation upon which his answer is built.
From Nonviolence to Jeeva Karunyam: The Active Protection of Life
Ahimsaโnonviolenceโis a foundational principle in many great spiritual traditions. It is often understood as a passive restraint: do not harm, do not kill. Vallalarโs teaching takes this a critical step further. For him, the core practice was not passive non-harming but Jeeva Karunyam: active, living compassion and the protection of every soul from suffering.
Jeeva Karunyam means recognising that every living being, from the smallest insect to the largest mammal, is a soul on its own path. To cause suffering to any of them, especially through the terror and pain of slaughter, is not merely breaking a moral rule. In Vallalarโs science, it is an act that directly introduces the vibration of suffering into the world and, most critically, into oneโs own body.
Why Killing Animals is Wrong Spiritually: An Obstacle to Physical Immortality
Here we arrive at the core of Vallalarโs unique claim. Most teachings explain that killing is wrong because it harms the soul of the perpetrator, creates negative karma, or violates an ethical commandment. Vallalar taught that these things are true, but he revealed a more immediate, physical consequence. He stated that the practice of Jeeva Karunyam, taken to its fullness, opens the body itself to divine transformationโthe removal of aging, disease, and death.
Consuming meat, he taught, is the single greatest obstacle to this transformation. When an animal is killed, its body is flooded with the chemistry of fear and the energy of pain. To eat its flesh is to consume that pain and fear, embedding it into your own cellular structure. This dense, heavy vibration of suffering physically prevents the body from receiving the subtle influx of Arut Perum Jลti, the divine grace-light that initiates the transformation.
The spiritual reason for not killing animals is therefore intensely practical: it is the primary block to achieving a deathless physical existence.
The Three Stages of the Deathless Body
Vallalar documented a precise, three-stage process of bodily transformation in his work, Thiru Arutpa. This was not a metaphor but a literal, scientific path. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamโactive compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings.
Suddha Deham: The Pure Body
The first stage is achieved through complete Jeeva Karunyam, a purely plant-based diet as detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, and mantra recitation. In this stage, the physical body is purified of all impurities. It becomes immune to disease, the aging process halts, and the skin takes on a youthful glow.
As the practitioner continues, the physical body is further refined by the grace-light. It becomes a body of sound and light, growing increasingly subtle and weightless. Those who witnessed Vallalar in his later years reported that he cast no shadow and that his body seemed almost transparent. This stage transcends the limitations of conventional physics.
Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body
The final stage, which witness accounts attribute to Vallalar himself, is the complete dissolution of the physical form into a body of pure grace-light. This is the ultimate attainment of deathlessnessโnot an escape from the body, but its complete transformation. This concept finds a distant echo in traditions like the Tibetan Rainbow Body, but Vallalar presented a systematic path to achieve it, with Jeeva Karunyam as its non-negotiable foundation.
A person following this path, after several months of consistent compassionate living and a clean diet, might notice that their sleep requirements have naturally decreased and a feeling of physical lightness persists throughout the day. Vallalar taught that these were early, tangible signs of the body beginning its shift toward the Suddha Deham.
Your First Step in Jeeva Karunyam Today
This path may seem vast, but it begins with a single, conscious choice. The goal is not perfection but a change in direction.
Today, choose one meal where you would normally eat meat and consciously replace it with a plant-based option. It can be as simple as one of the foods Vallalar recommended in his Nithya Karma Vidhiโplain rice, lentils, or simple cooked vegetables. As you prepare and eat this meal, hold the awareness that this small act prevented the suffering of another living being. That is Jeeva Karunyam in practice.
