Why Animals Feel Pain Karma: Vallalar’s Compassionate Answer

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is why animals feel pain karma. To ask this question is to carry a heavy weight. It is to see suffering in the world and wonder if you are somehow part of it, or if that pain will return to you in some way. That fear is real, and it comes from a place of conscience. While many traditions speak of karma as a system of cosmic justice, Vallalar offered a radically different view centered on boundless compassion. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who documented it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center where food was offered freely to anyone, a practice that continues uninterrupted to this day. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

Answering Why Animals Feel Pain Karma: The Cycle of Suffering

Vallalar taught that the universe operates on a principle of reflection. The harm we inflict on other living beings, particularly for the sake of food, does not simply vanish. It creates a karmic consequence that cycles back to the one who caused it. This is not a punishment from an external judge, but a natural law, like gravity.

He observed that eating meat introduces the fear, pain, and violence of the animal’s death into our own physical and subtle bodies. This, he explained, becomes the seed for future harm and disease. The suffering we cause returns to us because, at a fundamental level, we have made it part of ourselves. The question of why animals feel pain is answered by the karmic reality that their pain becomes our own.

The True Meaning of Karma: Not Punishment, but Grace

If the cycle of suffering were the entire story, it would be a source of despair. But Vallalar’s central teaching was not about punishment. It was about the extraordinary and relentless compassion of the Divine, which he called Arut Perum Jōti, the Vast Grace-Light.

He taught that even while we cause harm, God continues to give us another day, another breath, and another chance to choose differently. The fact that we wake up each morning is the ultimate evidence of this grace. The karmic cycle exists, but the grace-light is always present, offering a way out. This is the measure of divine compassion: it does not wait for us to be perfect. It is available right now, in this moment, regardless of our past actions.

A Practice to Connect with Divine Compassion

To help people connect directly with this grace-light, Vallalar gave a simple yet powerful mantra. He taught that its recitation could calm the mind, open the heart, and attune the entire being to the frequency of compassion. This practice is not a request for intervention, but an alignment with the grace that is already present.

The Mahamantra is:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€”
TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

The meaning is:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

Reciting this, even for a few minutes, can begin to shift one’s awareness from the fear of karma to the reality of grace.

Jeeva Karunyam: The Foundation for Ending the Cycle

Understanding the karmic cycle is one thing; breaking it is another. Vallalar provided a direct and practical method called Jeeva Karunyam β€” active compassion and care for all living beings. This is the foundational practice of his path, Sanmarkkam.

Jeeva Karunyam begins with the commitment to not cause harm. For Vallalar, this meant a plant-based diet was non-negotiable. In his text, Nithya Karma Vidhi, he outlined a diet that supports spiritual clarity and physical purity, free from the karmic burden of animal suffering. But the practice extends beyond diet. It is an active empathy that expresses itself in feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, and protecting those who are vulnerable, whether human or animal.

This active compassion is what dissolves the karmic seeds of past actions. It is the practical application of recognizing the grace-light in all beings.

The Body as a Record of Our Choices

Vallalar taught that a life of Jeeva Karunyam leads to a profound transformation of the physical body itself. He documented three stages of this process.

The first is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body, which becomes free from disease, sleep, and aging through compassionate living and a pure diet. The next stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body, a body of subtle light and sound that is no longer subject to physical laws. The final stage, which he alone demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body, where the physical form dissolves completely into the Vast Grace-Light. This ultimate transformation has been compared to the Rainbow Body phenomena documented in some Tibetan traditions, but Vallalar’s path is uniquely centered on compassion as the primary agent of change.

These stages are not abstract goals but the natural result of ending the cycle of harm and aligning fully with divine compassion.

One Concrete Action to Change the Cycle Today

Vallalar taught that transformation begins with a single, conscious choice. The most powerful choice you can make today to address the karma of animal suffering is in your food.

Replace one meal that would have contained meat with a plant-based option. As you eat, consider that this single act prevents suffering and breaks a link in the karmic chain. This is not about guilt or perfection. It is a simple, tangible expression of Jeeva Karunyam that begins to change your body and your world immediately.
