Transcending the Physical Body: Vallalar’s 3-Stage Path

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is transcending the physical body.

If you are searching for this, you are likely feeling the weight of the body’s limitations. This is not a casual intellectual question. It comes from a real place of confronting illness, aging, or the finality of death, and feeling a deep refusal to accept that this is all there is. For you, the body may feel less like a home and more like a cage.

Most spiritual traditions answer the question of death by describing what happens to the soul after it leaves the body. Vallalar asked a different question: what if the body itself could be transformed so that physical death becomes unnecessary? To understand his answer, we first need to look at the man who lived it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for the hungry that has been feeding people freely, 24 hours a day, for over 150 years. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

Redefining Life, Not Just Explaining Death

The core of Vallalar’s teaching is not about preparing for an afterlife. It is about a radical re-engineering of this life and this very body. He saw the physical form not as a temporary vessel to be discarded, but as a dense material that could be refined into a permanent, immortal vehicle of pure light.

He taught that the human body, when properly purified through compassion, diet, and devotion, could undergo a complete alchemical change. This was not a metaphor. For Vallalar, it was a biological and spiritual process with observable stages, which he meticulously documented in his writings. His goal was to make this science available to everyone who was willing to live a life of absolute compassion.

The Three-Stage Path to Transcending the Physical Body

Vallalar outlined a three-stage transformation that culminates in a body no longer subject to physical dissolution. He insisted that none of these stages could even begin without the non-negotiable foundation of Jeeva Karunyam. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β€” active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings, especially by refusing to consume them.

Stage 1: Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)

The first stage focuses on purifying the physical body of all dense, heavy, and death-inducing qualities. The primary practice for this is a strict sattvic, plant-based diet, detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi. This diet excludes meat, fish, eggs, and even certain plants considered to be agitating to the system. The goal is to make the body light, free of disease, and impervious to decay.

This is not just about food. Suddha Deham also requires purifying one’s actions, speech, and thoughts. By living a life of harmlessness, truthfulness, and boundless compassion, the body begins to lose its gross nature and take on a subtle radiance. It becomes a clean vessel, prepared for a greater infusion of light.

Stage 2: Pranava Deham (The Primal Body)

Once the body is sufficiently purified, the second transformation can begin. The Suddha Deham becomes the Pranava Deham, a body made not of flesh but of divine sound and light. At this stage, the physical form becomes extremely subtle and is no longer dependent on food or water. It is sustained directly by the divine grace-light, which Vallalar called Arut Perum Jōti.

The central practice for developing the Pranava Deham is the constant recitation of the Mahamantra:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to: β€œThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.”

This mantra is not a prayer asking for something, but a statement of reality that re-tunes the body to its true nature as light. The body becomes luminous and is no longer bound by ordinary physical laws. This stage has some similarities to descriptions of the Tibetan Rainbow Body, where a master’s physical form dissolves into light upon death, but Vallalar’s teaching describes this as a state achieved while fully alive and conscious.

Stage 3: Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)

The final stage, which Vallalar documented through his own experience, is the Gnana Deham. In this state, the Pranava Deham merges completely with the Vast Grace-Light, becoming a body of pure wisdom and omnipresent consciousness.

The individual form dissolves entirely into the formless, infinite field of Grace. The body is everywhere and nowhere. It is no longer a separate object in space but is one with the divine intelligence that pervades everything. According to the Thiru Arutpa and the witness accounts of his final disappearance, this was the state Vallalar demonstrated. He did not die; he became the light itself.

Start with Compassion on Your Plate

Vallalar’s path to transcending the physical body begins with a very simple, grounded action: removing cruelty from your diet. He taught that the fear and pain of animals consumed as food becomes part of our own cellular structure, making the body dense, heavy, and prone to death.

Today, you can take the first step. Replace one meal that contains animal products with a simple, pure option from Vallalar’s Nithya Karma Vidhi. A meal of rice, lentils (dhal), and cooked vegetables like brinjal (eggplant) or drumstick (Moringa) is a perfect start. This is not just a dietary change; it is a declaration that you choose life and compassion, which is the foundational energy for building a body of light.
