The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is spiritual secrets of long life. Below, you will find the three-stage body transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpaβand what each stage actually requires. Perhaps you feel it tooβthat deep sense that life is meant for more than just gradual decline. While many traditions speak of aging with grace, Vallalar presented a science for reversing it entirely. To understand how, we must look at the man who documented this process in his own body.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβthough he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the hungry that has operated continuously, without interruption, for over 150 years. His central teaching was that the divine reveals itself as a Vast Grace-Light, Arut Perum Jyothi, and that compassion is the key to experiencing it. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
A Body That Grows Younger: The Physical Evidence
The reversal of aging was not a spiritual metaphor for Vallalarβit was a physiological event documented in his life. Historical witnesses and records from his sacred text, Thiru Arutpa, attest that as his spiritual practice deepened, his physical body began to change in visible ways. Wrinkles that had formed on his skin disappeared. His complexion took on the radiant quality of a newborn.
This was not a cosmetic phenomenon. Vallalar taught that these external changes were signs of a profound internal transformation. The physical body, when purified and filled with the grace of Arut Perum Jyothi, begins to shed the characteristics of decay and death. It becomes lighter, stronger, and more luminous. For him, a long life was not about extending old age but about transforming the body into a vessel capable of holding a divine light.
The Three Stages: Unlocking the Spiritual Secrets of Long Life
Vallalar detailed a precise, three-stage process for this bodily transformation. Each stage represents a deeper integration with the divine Grace-Light, resulting in a body that transcends ordinary physical laws.
Suddha Deham: The Pure Body
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is the foundation of the entire process, achieved through disciplined and compassionate living. It begins with purifying the body of all inputs derived from violence and suffering. Vallalarβs dietary manual, Nithya Karma Vidhi, outlines a plant-based diet free from meat, fish, and eggs. He taught that eating meat creates a coarse physical and spiritual density that blocks the flow of grace. Beyond diet, this stage requires purity of thought, word, and deed, grounded in the practice of Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion for all living beings.
Once the body is sufficiently purified, it can evolve into the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This form is described as being made of subtle sound and light. It is no longer subject to hunger, thirst, aging, or disease in the conventional sense. The body becomes extremely light and can appear and disappear at will. This stage is sometimes compared to the Tibetan tradition of the rainbow body, where a masterβs physical form dissolves into light upon death. Vallalarβs path, however, aimed for this transformation to occur while still living.
Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body
The final stage, which Vallalar documented achieving himself, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the physical form into the pure consciousness of the Vast Grace-Light, Arut Perum Jyothi. In this state, the body is formless and limitless, a perfect expression of divine compassion and intelligence. Historical accounts from his disciples describe his body becoming increasingly transparent toward the end of his life, a physical manifestation of this ultimate transformation. This stage is presented as the destination Vallalar reached, a possibility he opened for humanity.
The Foundational Practices for Transformation
Vallalar did not present these stages as abstract goals but as the natural result of specific daily practices. He insisted that the path was a science, available to anyone sincere enough to follow the instructions.
The most important practice is Jeeva Karunyam, or compassion for all life. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This means not harming any creature, directly or indirectly, and actively working to alleviate the hunger and pain of others. A practitioner who notices a hungry animal and provides it with food is performing a foundational act of this science.
This compassion extends directly to diet. The body cannot be purified while consuming the flesh of animals that have experienced fear and pain. The diet outlined in his Nithya Karma Vidhiβbased on rice, lentils, and certain vegetables like brinjal (eggplant) and drumstick (Moringa)βis designed to create a body receptive to grace.
The central mantra for invoking this grace is the Mahamantra. Vallalar gave this to be recited daily:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to: βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β Reciting this mantra turns the mind and body toward the source of transformation, calling the divine light into every cell.
A Concrete Step You Can Take Today
The entire science of bodily transformation begins with a single act of compassion. Before you do anything else, find one living being and ease its suffering. This can be as simple as placing a bowl of clean water outside for birds or feeding a stray animal. Do it with the conscious intention of practicing Jeeva Karunyam. According to Vallalar, this small, outward act does more to purify the body and open it to grace than hours of inward-focused meditation.
