Spiritual Path Without Religion: Vallalar’s Pure Path

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is spiritual path without religion. Below, you will find the direct path he created for every human being, which requires no conversion, and the stages of bodily transformation he documented as its result. I feel that many of us are looking for exactly this. While many traditions require initiation or adherence to a specific dogma, Vallalar built a path on a single, universal principle available to anyone. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who claimed it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Portrait of Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, feeding thousands daily without question. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

Suddha Sanmargam: A Spiritual Path Without Religion

Vallalar called his path Suddha Sanmargam β€” the Pure Path of Virtue. He designed it specifically for those who feel a deep spiritual calling but find no home in the structures of organized religion. He saw the divisions of caste, creed, and religion as man-made barriers that obscured a fundamental truth: the divine light, which he called Arut Perum Jyothi, is accessible to all beings equally.

Suddha Sanmargam does not ask you to convert, abandon your existing faith, or undergo any special initiation. It has only two requirements. The first is a sincere inner call to Arut Perum Jyothi, the Vast Grace-Light. The second is the daily practice of Jeeva Karunyam, or active compassion toward all living beings. This is a path available to any human being, exactly as they are.

What is Jeeva Karunyam? The Single Requirement for the Path

Jeeva Karunyam is the foundation of Suddha Sanmargam. It is not a vague feeling of goodwill, but a conscious, active discipline of preventing suffering in other living beings. Vallalar taught that the greatest cause of suffering inflicted by humans is the killing of animals for food. He argued that when we consume meat, we internalize the fear, pain, and dense vibratory signature of a creature’s death.

This act, according to his teachings, creates a thick veil that blocks the soul’s ability to perceive the subtle grace of Arut Perum Jyothi. Therefore, the first and most important practice of the path is to adopt a plant-based diet. In his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, he provides detailed guidance on a sattvic diet that purifies the body and mind. Vallalar taught that none of the more advanced techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β€” active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings.

The Three Stages of Bodily Transformation

For Vallalar, the human body was not an obstacle to be overcome but a laboratory for divine science. He documented a three-stage process of physical transformation, culminating in what he called the deathless body. This was not a metaphor, but a literal, scientific process available to those who perfected Jeeva Karunyam.

Suddha Deham β€” The Pure Body

The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is the natural result of a life lived with consistent compassion, particularly through a plant-based diet. Vallalar taught that as the body is purified of the karmic weight of causing suffering, it becomes immune to disease, decay, and fatigue. The skin softens, the need for sleep lessens, and the body grows light and filled with a natural energy.

Pranava Deham β€” The Primal Body

The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the practitioner deepens their call to the divine light, the physical body begins to change its very composition. It becomes increasingly subtle, almost translucent, and is sustained directly by grace rather than by gross food. This is the stage where the central practice becomes the constant recitation of the Mahamantra:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to: β€œThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.” This mantra, Vallalar explained, attunes the body to the frequency of divine light. Some have compared this stage to concepts in other traditions, such as the Tibetan Rainbow Body or the esoteric Merkaba, but Vallalar’s description is a unique and self-contained science.

Gnana Deham β€” The Wisdom Body

The final stage is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. In this state, the physical form merges completely with the Vast Grace-Light, becoming a body of pure wisdom and grace. According to his own writings in Thiru Arutpa and the accounts of those who knew him, Vallalar himself achieved this state. His final disappearance is considered the demonstration of this ultimate transformation, where the body does not die but dissolves into its essential nature as immortal light.

Your First Step on This Path Today

You do not need to master complex theories to begin. The entire path starts with one simple, conscious choice. For your next meal, choose not to consume any animal products. Select foods that did not require a living being to suffer or die for your nourishment β€” rice, lentils, vegetables, or fruits. As you eat, reflect on this small act of non-harming. According to Vallalar, this single act of Jeeva Karunyam is the first and most powerful step toward purifying the body and opening the soul to grace.
