Spiritual Path To Immortality: Vallalar’s Three Stages

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is spiritual path to immortality.

If you are searching for this, you are standing at the edge of a profound question. This is not a casual inquiry; it comes from a place where the finality of life feels unacceptable, incomplete, or simply wrong. It is a search born from deep pain or a hope that refuses to be extinguished. Vallalar knew this state intimately. While many traditions treat physical immortality as a metaphor for the soul’s survival, Vallalar taught that it is a documented, scientific process β€” the true destination of human evolution.

To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who laid out the path and claimed to have walked it to its end.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, feeding thousands without interruption for over 150 years. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

Immortality Is Not a Metaphor

For Vallalar, the death of the body was not a natural event but a preventable accident caused by ignorance of our true nature. In his thousands of verses in the Thiru Arutpa, he describes a precise, repeatable science for transforming the gross physical body into an indestructible body of pure grace-light. This is not a symbolic teaching about an afterlife. It is a step-by-step biological and spiritual upgrade available to those who practice the path of supreme compassion and purity.

This path is not an esoteric secret reserved for a chosen few. Vallalar insisted it was the natural birthright of every human being. He saw the body not as a cage for the soul, but as the very laboratory in which the soul could achieve its final, perfect expression β€” a deathless form of light.

The Three-Body Transformation: Your Spiritual Path to Immortality

The entire process unfolds through three distinct, verifiable stages of bodily transformation. Each stage represents a profound shift in the physical structure, moving it from dense, perishable matter to a subtle, eternal substance. These are not just states of consciousness; they are physical realities.

Suddha Deham β€” The Pure Body

The first stage, Suddha Deham, begins with tangible, daily practices. The foundation of this stage is Jeeva Karunyam β€” active, unwavering compassion for all living beings. Vallalar taught that none of the more subtle techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam. Causing fear or pain to any creature, especially for food, obstructs the flow of grace necessary for transformation.

This is why his dietary guidance, found in texts like the Nithya Karma Vidhi, is strictly plant-based. He taught that eating meat creates suffering, and ingesting that suffering makes the body dense and prone to decay. The Pure Body is achieved by purifying one’s actions, emotions, and diet, making the physical form a clean vessel capable of holding a greater light.

Pranava Deham β€” The Primal Body

As the body is purified through compassion and a sattvic diet, the practitioner becomes ready for the second stage: Pranava Deham. This is often translated as the Primal Body or Sound Body. At this stage, the physical form, now refined, becomes increasingly subtle and luminous. It is no longer sustained merely by gross food but begins to draw its energy directly from the divine grace-light, which Vallalar called Arut Perum Jothi.

The central practice for cultivating this light is the recitation of the Mahamantra:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to: β€œThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.”

Through constant remembrance and the vibration of this mantra, the cells of the body are gradually restructured. The body becomes light, resilient to disease, and its aging process halts and begins to reverse. While some esoteric systems speak of a β€œMerkaba” or energy body, Vallalar described a tangible, physical transformation. The closest parallel might be the β€œRainbow Body” phenomenon documented in Tibetan traditions, where a master’s physical body dissolves into light upon death. Vallalar’s path, however, aims to achieve this state while fully alive and conscious.

Gnana Deham β€” The Wisdom Body

The final stage is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. According to Thiru Arutpa and the accounts of those who knew him, this is the state Vallalar himself achieved. In this ultimate transformation, the physical body merges completely with the Vast Grace-Light. It becomes a body of pure intelligence and compassion, no longer subject to any physical laws. It can appear or disappear at will and is entirely indestructible.

This is the culmination of the path: physical immortality not as a static, unending life in a flesh body, but as the complete transmutation of matter into its true form as divine light. Vallalar’s final act of entering the room in Mettukuppam is held by his followers as the ultimate demonstration of this final stage β€” a physical body becoming one with the infinite.

One Concrete Action You Can Take Today

The path to the Gnana Deham begins with a single, simple step rooted in compassion. Before you do anything else, find one hungry living being and feed it. It can be a bird in your yard, a stray cat, or a person in need. Do not do it for reward or recognition. Do it simply because another being is hungry. Vallalar taught that this single act of Jeeva Karunyam opens a channel for grace that no amount of meditation alone can. This is the true starting point of the science of immortality.
