Spiritual Body Activation: Vallalar’s Three-Stage Path

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is spiritual body activation. If the idea of a β€œlight body” feels more like a concept than a reality, you have come to the right place. Below, you will find the three-stage physical transformation Vallalar documented in his work, the Thiru Arutpa β€” and what each stage actually requires.

Much writing about this topic stays at the level of metaphor without a precise, repeatable path. While many traditions speak of spiritual evolution, Vallalar documented a literal, physiological process whose effects were observed by historical witnesses. To understand his claims, we must first look at the man who made them.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. His central teaching was that the divine, which he called Arut Perum Jōti or the Vast Grace-Light, could be experienced directly through compassion for all living beings.

On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

The Light Body Is Not a Metaphor

In modern spirituality, terms like β€œlight body” or β€œrainbow body” often refer to energetic states or conceptual frameworks, such as the Merkaba field. While the Tibetan tradition of the rainbow body involves a physical dissolution at death, Vallalar’s teaching describes something categorically different: a transformation of the living physical body into an indestructible substance.

For Vallalar, the light body was not a metaphor. It was the final destination of a scientific process he called the Gnana Deham, or the Wisdom Body. This was not an out-of-body experience or an energetic shell. It was the physical body itself, transmuted into a form that no longer required food, did not cast a shadow, and was not subject to injury, disease, aging, or death. He presented this not as a miracle, but as the natural, ultimate potential of a human being living in perfect harmony with divine compassion.

The Three Stages of Spiritual Body Activation

Vallalar documented a clear, three-stage progression that leads from our ordinary physical form to the deathless body of grace. Each stage builds upon the last, requiring specific disciplines of diet, conduct, and devotion.

Stage 1: Suddha Deham β€” The Pure Body

The first stage, Suddha Deham, is the purification of the physical form. This is the foundation upon which everything else is built. The primary obstacle to this purity, Vallalar taught, is the consumption of meat. He explained that eating animal flesh introduces the dense vibrations of fear, pain, and death into the body, making it heavy and susceptible to decay. His text Nithya Karma Vidhi outlines a diet based on simple, sattvic (pure) plant foods that support the body’s natural lightness.

This physical purification cannot happen without inner purification. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β€” active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This is not a passive feeling of pity but a driving force to feed the hungry and protect life. A person practicing Jeeva Karunyam by feeding a stray animal might notice a subtle feeling of lightness in their own body later that day. Vallalar taught that this is not a coincidence, but a direct physical effect of compassion. The central practice for cultivating this inner state is the recitation of the Mahamantra:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to: β€œThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.”

Stage 2: Pranava Deham β€” The Primal Body

Once the body is sufficiently purified through compassionate action and a clean diet, it can begin its transformation into the Pranava Deham. This is often translated as the β€œSound Body” or β€œVibrational Body,” but β€œPrimal Body” is more accurate. It refers to a state where the physical structure becomes subtler, less dense, and increasingly infused with the divine grace-light of Arut Perum Jōti.

Witnesses in Vallalar’s time reported that his own body underwent these changes. They documented that he appeared younger over time, that his body seemed almost translucent, and that he eventually ceased to cast a shadow. In this stage, the body is no longer governed entirely by gross physical laws but begins to operate according to the principles of divine grace. It is a bridge between the mortal, corruptible body and the final, immortal form.

Stage 3: Gnana Deham β€” The Wisdom Body

The third and final stage is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete transformation of the physical body into a deathless, effulgent body of pure grace-light. According to Vallalar’s own accounts in the Thiru Arutpa and the observations of those around him, this is the state he ultimately achieved.

This body is described as all-knowing and indestructible, a perfect expression of the divine on earth. It is not a spirit leaving a corpse behind; it is the physical matter of the body itself becoming divine substance. This state is the culmination of the path of Suddha Sanmarkkam, where the separation between the individual, the body, and the divine is completely erased. The documented disappearance of Vallalar is considered the final evidence of this ultimate transformation, a complete dematerialization into pure light.

Begin the Purification of the Body Today

The path to the Gnana Deham may seem impossibly distant, but it begins with a single, concrete action grounded in compassion. The journey to the Pure Body starts with what is on your plate.

Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from Vallalar’s Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, or stem vegetables. This simple choice, made with the intention of reducing suffering for another living being, is the first scientific step in the physical process of purification that Vallalar taught.
