The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is saints who became immortal. Below, you will find the three-stage body transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpa, the historical evidence of his own final transformation, and the one practice he said makes it all possible. For many, stories of immortality feel like distant legends from another time. Across traditions there are accounts of saints whose bodies did not decay, or who disappeared without leaving a corpseβthe incorruptible bodies of Catholic saints, Tibetan masters of the rainbow body, Taoist immortals. Among all of them, Ramalinga Swamigal stands out: he not only documented the path to physical immortality in explicit detail in Thiru Arutpa but left historical witness accounts of his own transformation and disappearance in 1874.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats, though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught a path of universal compassion and self-purification called the Suddha Sanmarkkam, or the βTrue Path.β His central mission was to eliminate suffering in all its forms, beginning with the hunger of others. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
What Makes Vallalarβs Path to Immortality Different?
While many spiritual traditions speak of liberation after death or heavenly realms, Vallalarβs teachings focus on the transformation of the physical body itself. He did not present this as a miracle reserved for a chosen few but as a methodical, scientific process available to any sincere person. His six-volume work, Thiru Arutpa (βThe Sacred Verses of Graceβ), is not a collection of parables or abstract philosophy. It is a detailed manual documenting his own physical and spiritual changes, providing a step-by-step guide for others to follow.
This is a significant distinction from other accounts of incorruptibility or ascension. The preservation of a Catholic saintβs body is typically discovered after death and seen as a divine sign. The Tibetan rainbow body, or jalu, is a secret teaching where the masterβs body dissolves into light, often witnessed by a few close disciples. Taoist alchemy contains complex formulas for an elixir of immortality. Vallalar, in contrast, made his teachings public and recorded the physiological and spiritual science behind the transformation in thousands of verses.
The Three Stages of the Deathless Body
Vallalar described a three-stage transformation where the physical body, through specific practices of compassion, diet, and devotion, is transmuted into a body of pure light. He named these stages Suddha Deham, Pranava Deham, and Gnana Deham.
Suddha Deham: The Pure Body
The first stage, Suddha Deham, begins with purifying the physical form. This is not about asceticism but about removing the elements that cause density, disease, and decay. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. The foundation of the Pure Body is a strict plant-based, or Sattvic, diet. He taught that eating meat or causing harm to any creature introduces energies of fear and death into oneβs own cells, making physical transformation impossible. By consuming simple, life-giving foods and practicing relentless compassion, the body begins to shed its gross nature, becoming light, healthy, and free from impurities.
As the body purifies, it becomes capable of entering the second stage: Pranava Deham. Here, the physical form becomes increasingly subtle and luminous, sustained not by food but by the divine grace-light, which he called Arut Perum JΕti. At this stage, the body no longer casts a shadow and is said to be impervious to the elements. The central practice for cultivating this state is the constant repetition of the Mahamantra, a call to the grace-light itself:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light. Through this practice, the practitioner attunes their very cells to the frequency of grace, gradually replacing the bodyβs material substance with divine light.
Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body
The final stage, Gnana Deham, is the complete transmutation of the body into its essential nature as pure light and intelligence. This is the state Vallalar himself demonstrated. According to witness accounts and his own final writings, the physical body dissolves entirely, merging with the omnipresent Vast Grace-Light. It is not death but a transition into a deathless, formless, and universally present existence. Vallalarβs teachings in Thiru Arutpa present this not as an annihilation of self but as the ultimate expansion of self into a state of boundless compassion and awareness, capable of acting anywhere in the universe to alleviate suffering.
The Historical Evidence for saints who became immortal
Vallalarβs claim is not based on ancient scripture or myth alone. His final act was a deliberate, public demonstration. Weeks before his disappearance, he gave explicit instructions to his followers, telling them that the divine light had merged with his body and that he would soon conceal himself from view. He asked them not to open the door to his room at Siddhi Valagam in Mettukuppam.
When government officials, led by the British Collector John Henry Garstin, grew concerned, they arrived and, after some time, ordered the room unsealed. They found it empty. There was no sign of a secret tunnel or any means of escape. Garstinβs official report to the Government of Madras, dated 1874, documents the event, stating that Ramalinga Swamigal had disappeared and was never seen again. This official record, written by a skeptical colonial administrator, provides a unique historical anchor for what would otherwise be considered a purely spiritual claim.
A Practical Step Toward a Lighter Body
The path to a deathless body begins with the foundational practice of compassion, or Jeeva Karunyam. Vallalar taught that the first and most direct way to practice this is to stop participating in the suffering of other creatures.
Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from Vallalarβs Nithya Karma Vidhi (a guide to daily conduct): simple rice, lentils (dhal), or cooked stem vegetables like plantain stem or drumstick (Moringa). This is not just a dietary choice; it is the first scientific step in purifying the body of the dense energies of violence and fear, making it receptive to the grace-light.
