Saints Who Achieved Immortality: Vallalar’s Documented Path

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is saints who achieved immortality.

If you are looking for this, it is not an intellectual exercise. This search comes from a place of deep pain or fearβ€”the raw confrontation with the body’s fragility and the finality of death. You are asking if there is a way through the wall, not just a way to accept it. Vallalar knew this feeling not as a concept, but as the central question of human life.

Across traditions there are accounts of saints whose bodies did not decay, or who disappeared without leaving a corpseβ€”the incorruptible bodies of Catholic saints, Tibetan masters of the rainbow body, Taoist immortals. Among all of them, Ramalinga Swamigal stands out: he not only documented the path to physical immortality in explicit detail in Thiru Arutpa but left historical witness accounts of his own transformation and disappearance in 1874. To understand why his account is so compelling, we must look at the man who documented it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβ€”though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He demonstrated a path to physical transformation that was open, systematic, and based on the principles of compassion and divine light. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβ€”his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

More Than Miracles: How Vallalar Differs from Other Saints Who Achieved Immortality

Many spiritual traditions hold accounts of masters who overcame physical death. We hear of the incorruptible bodies of Catholic saints, preserved without decay for centuries. In Tibetan Buddhism, there are stories of advanced Dzogchen masters attaining the rainbow body, their physical form dissolving into pure light at the time of death, sometimes leaving only hair and nails. The Taoist sages sought a similar outcome, aiming to become immortals who could ascend in broad daylight.

These accounts often feel like singular, miraculous eventsβ€”the result of a grace bestowed upon a chosen few, with the specific methods kept secret or transmitted only to a handful of disciples.

Vallalar’s work is different in its very intention. He did not present his achievement as a miracle. Instead, he treated physical transformation as a universal science, a step-by-step process available to anyone willing to live a life of supreme compassion. In his 6,000-verse work, the Thiru Arutpa (The Holy Book of Grace), he laid out the principles, practices, diet, and internal changes required to turn a mortal, flesh-and-blood body into a deathless body of light.

The Three Stages of Physical Transformation

Vallalar’s path does not seek to escape the body but to transform it completely. He described a three-stage process where the physical form is progressively refined until it becomes an instrument of pure divine expression.

Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)

This is the first and most foundational stage. The Suddha Deham is a body perfected in its earthly form, made immune to disease, decay, and the need for sleep or elimination. Vallalar taught that this state is achieved by purifying one’s character and diet. The primary method is the practice of Jeeva Karunyam, or compassion for all living beings, which includes a strict plant-based diet as detailed in his text, Nithya Karma Vidhi. By removing all forms of violence from one’s life and consumption, the body begins to shed its gross, mortal nature.

Pranava Deham (The Primal Body)

Once the Pure Body is established, the practitioner can develop the Pranava Deham. This is a body made of grace-light and subtle sound, a form that is visible but not solid. It is impervious to the elementsβ€”it cannot be harmed by fire, water, or weapons. This body is no longer bound by the same physical laws as the flesh body. Vallalar described it as a luminous, golden form, a bridge between the physical and the purely spiritual.

Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)

The final stage is the Gnana Deham, or the Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the individual form into the infinite ocean of Arut Perum Jothi, the Vast Grace-Light. The body becomes a formless, omnipresent state of pure consciousness and divine light. According to Vallalar’s final writings and the historical accounts of his disappearance, this is the state he fully realized. He did not die; he merged, demonstrating the ultimate potential of the science he taught.

The Foundation of a Deathless Body: Compassion and Light

Vallalar was clear that these bodily transformations were not the result of complex yogic techniques or esoteric rituals alone. The entire process is fueled by two things: compassion (Jeeva Karunyam) and the invocation of divine light (Arut Perum Jothi).

Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβ€”active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. He saw the act of eating meat as a primary obstacle, stating that the fear and pain of a slaughtered animal becomes part of the person who consumes it, anchoring the body in mortality. To build a body of light, one must first stop causing darkness for others.

The central practice for invoking the Grace-Light is the recitation of the Mahamantra:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€”
TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to: β€œThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.” Vallalar taught that this mantra is not a mere request but a statement of reality that, when repeated with feeling, fills every cell of the body with divine intelligence, gradually replacing the mortal structure with an immortal one.

A practitioner might begin to experience this as a quiet shift. After weeks of feeding the hungry and reciting the mantra, they may notice a physical lightness or a clarity of mind that was not there before. Vallalar taught this is the first sign that compassion is remaking the body from within.

Your First Step on the Path of Light Today

You do not need to understand the entire science to begin. The path starts with a single, compassionate act.

Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from Vallalar’s Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, or stem vegetables like plantain stem. Before eating, hold the intention that this small act reduces suffering in the world. This is the first step toward building a body of purity and light.
