The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is overcome death spiritually. The fear of death is not an abstract thought. It is a weight on the chest, a quiet dread that can surface without warning, making ordinary life feel fragile. You are looking for a real answer, not just a comforting story about what might happen next. Vallalar knew this feeling and offered a response that addresses the body itself. While many traditions offer solace by describing what happens after the body dies, Vallalar asked a different question: what if the body itself could be transformed so that physical death becomes unnecessary? To understand his answer, we first need to look at the man who lived it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats — though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that operates to this day and taught a universal path of compassion and self-purification open to people of all faiths. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again — his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
The Foundation of Transformation: Compassion and Diet
Vallalar’s path to physical transformation does not begin with esoteric breathing techniques or complex meditations. It starts with two grounded, daily practices: compassion for all life and a pure diet.
He called the first principle Jeeva Karunyam, or compassion towards all living beings. This is not a passive feeling but an active practice of preventing and alleviating suffering wherever one finds it. Vallalar taught that none of the more advanced techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam. The constant radiation of kindness and the refusal to cause harm—to humans or animals—is what purifies the body’s subtle structure, making it receptive to grace. A practitioner might notice, for instance, that after feeding a hungry person, their own anxiety quiets down, a direct experience of the principle Vallalar described.
This compassion extends directly to diet. In his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, Vallalar provides detailed instructions for a plant-based diet, arguing that consuming meat or any product born of an animal’s fear and pain introduces those same qualities into the body. This creates a dense, heavy physical state that blocks the flow of divine grace-light, or Arut Perum Jōti. A diet of sattvic, or pure, plant foods like rice, lentils, and easily digestible vegetables was considered essential to lighten the physical form.
How to Overcome Death Spiritually: The Three-Stage Bodily Transformation
With the foundation of compassion and pure diet established, Vallalar documented a three-stage process of bodily transmutation. This is his direct answer to the problem of physical death, a science of evolving the body beyond its mortal limitations.
First Stage: Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)
The Suddha Deham, or Pure Body, is the first major milestone. Achieved through consistent practice of Jeeva Karunyam, a pure diet, and devotion, this body becomes immune to disease, fatigue, and the conventional process of aging. The physical form becomes light, lustrous, and no longer dependent on normal sleep or food intake. Witnesses documented that Vallalar himself exhibited these qualities for years, appearing youthful and tireless. This stage makes the body a perfect, incorruptible vessel, ready for the next phase of transformation.
The second stage is the transformation into the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. Here, the physical body, already perfected, becomes a form of pure light and sound. It is no longer entirely solid and can appear or disappear at will. This stage is fueled by the constant inner recitation of the Mahamantra Vallalar gave to the world:
Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Taṇi Perum Karuṇai — Aruṭ Perum Jōti
This translates to: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Chanting this mantra attunes the practitioner to the divine grace-light, gradually dissolving the dense physical structure into its subtler, luminous form. While this may sound abstract, it has contextual parallels in other traditions, such as the Rainbow Body in Tibetan Buddhism, where a master’s body is said to dissolve into light upon death. Vallalar’s teaching is distinct in that this transformation is meant to occur while one is fully alive and conscious.
Third Stage: Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)
The final stage, which Vallalar alone is documented to have fully realized, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. In this state, the individual form dissolves completely, merging into the omnipresent ocean of Arut Perum Jōti, the Vast Grace-Light. The body becomes one with divine consciousness itself—formless, deathless, and universally present. This is not an annihilation but an ultimate expansion. The historical accounts of Vallalar’s final disappearance, where he entered a room and vanished without a trace, are understood by his followers as the culmination of this process: the final, complete transformation into the deathless body of pure grace.
Begin with the Foundation: Feed One Hungry Being Today
The path to the deathless body may seem distant, but its first step is immediately available. Vallalar taught that every act of compassion changes the body. Today, make a conscious choice to practice Jeeva Karunyam.
Find one person or animal who is hungry and provide them with food. Do it without seeking recognition or reward. As you do it, hold the intention that their suffering may cease. This simple, outward act is the true beginning of the inner alchemy Vallalar described. It is the most powerful and direct way to begin purifying the self and opening the door to grace.
