Mystical Moments Meaning: Vallalar’s Grace-Light Answer

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is mystical moments meaning. Those fleeting feelings of connection or glimpses of inner light are not random; they point to a tangible reality you can learn to access directly. This article explains the source of these moments as a visible, scientific realityβ€”the Vast Grace-Lightβ€”and the precise path Vallalar documented to make it a permanent state of being. While many traditions speak of spiritual light as a metaphor, Vallalar encountered it as a physical presence, documented that encounter, and provided a science for its attainment.

To understand his claim, we must first look at the man himself.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβ€”though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught a path of compassion, selfless service, and body-transformation that was open to any person of any background. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβ€”his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

The Source of Mystical Light: Arut Perum Jyothi

When people search for the meaning of mystical moments, they are often describing an experience of light, warmth, or a feeling of profound unity. Vallalar gave a name to the source of these experiences: Arut Perum Jyothi, the Vast Grace-Light.

He did not present this as a concept or a philosophical idea. In the six volumes of his poetic work, Thiru Arutpa, he documents his direct, repeated, and visible encounters with this luminous presence. For Vallalar, God was not a distant being to be worshipped but a boundless, intelligent, and compassionate light that constitutes all of reality.

This Grace-Light is the reality that flickers into our awareness during those rare moments of stillness or deep insight. Vallalar taught that these are not just psychological events but brief attunements to the fundamental substance of the universe. His work was dedicated to creating a repeatable science for making this attunement stable and permanent.

The Three Stages of Embodying the Grace-Light

Vallalar outlined a three-stage transformation of the physical body into a body of light. This was not a theoretical map but a description of a process he claimed to have completed himself. The foundation for this entire process is Jeeva Karunyamβ€”active compassion. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam, which is the conscious choice to prevent and alleviate the suffering of other living beings.

1. Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)
This first stage is achieved through a specific plant-based diet, detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, and the unwavering practice of compassion. Eating in a way that causes no fear or pain to any creature purifies the physical structure. Vallalar documented that as the body purifies, its needs change. The requirements for sleep, food, and water diminish, and the body becomes resilient to disease and decay.

2. Pranava Deham (The Primal Body)
As the purification deepens, the body enters the second stage. The Suddha Deham becomes increasingly subtle and begins to radiate a visible light. Witnesses who knew Vallalar in his later years described his body as being translucent, casting no shadow. This is the Pranava Deham, a body made of primal substance, no longer subject to the same physical laws as a dense, mortal form.

3. Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)
The final stage, which Vallalar’s writings and witness accounts attribute to him, is the complete dissolution of the physical form into the Vast Grace-Light. The Gnana Deham is a body of pure wisdom and light, no longer bound by space or time. This state is sometimes compared to the β€œrainbow body” in Tibetan traditions, where a master’s physical form dissolves into light upon death. Vallalar’s transformation, however, was documented as a conscious, living process, culminating in his final disappearance.

Finding the mystical moments meaning in Daily Practice

Vallalar did not leave this profound teaching at the level of high philosophy. He provided a simple, powerful tool for any human being to begin attuning to the Vast Grace-Light. This tool is a Mahamantra, or Great Mantra.

He taught that the consistent recitation of these words calibrates the mind and body to the frequency of the Grace-Light, making those fleeting mystical moments more stable and accessible. The mantra is:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€”
TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

The meaning is:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

Repeating this mantra is not a petition to an external force. It is an act of resonance. It is a way of reminding the very cells of the body of their true nature as light and compassion, gradually clearing away the density that obscures this reality.

One Concrete Action to Begin Today

Instead of trying to force a mystical experience, take one small step toward attunement. Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed for two minutes. Recite the Mahamantra just once, out loud, slowly and clearly: β€œArut Perum Jōti, Arut Perum Jōti, Tani Perum Karunai, Arut Perum Jōti.” Do not look for an immediate result or a flash of light. Simply notice the feeling of the words in your mouth and in the room. That is the beginning of the science.
