The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is mindfulness without buddhism. This article lays out the practical path he documented for transforming daily life after that first inner stirringβa path of compassion, a specific mantra, and the gradual purification of the body. You have likely felt that there is something more to life than what you can see and touch. Much writing on mindfulness focuses on the mental state of awareness, but often stops there. Vallalarβs work begins where that awareness dawns, offering a complete science for what to do next. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who claimed it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβthough he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that has operated without interruption for over 150 years, and he taught a path of universal compassion called Samarasa Suddha Sanmarkkam. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
What Comes After Awakening?
Spiritual awakening is not a destination in Vallalarβs teachingβit is a beginning. The recognition that something deeper exists, that the material world does not fully satisfy, that the soul craves something it has not yet found: this is the first stirring. Vallalar identifies this stirring as Jeeva Karunyam, or compassion for all life, opening the path to Arut Perum Jyothi, the divine grace-light.
What comes after is not a philosophy to be studied but a practical path to be walked. Unlike practices that emphasize turning attention inward to observe the mind, Vallalarβs first step is to turn attention outward. He taught that the foundation of all spiritual progress is active compassion. It is the conscious choice to prevent or alleviate the suffering of any living being, from a hungry person to a frightened animal.
This outward action has a direct effect on the inner state. It quiets the ego and purifies the self without the struggle of mental discipline alone. The practice of mindfulness becomes an act of service, grounded in the real world.
The Science of the Mahamantra for Daily Life
The second tool for the transformation of daily life is a specific mantra. Vallalar gave this Maha-mantra not as a prayer to an external God, but as a scientific formula to attune the body and consciousness to the frequency of grace.
The mantra is:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
The translation is:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Reciting this mantraβsilently or aloudβis a central practice. Vallalar taught that its sound signature works directly on the physical cells, gradually infusing them with light. It is a way to constantly reorient the self toward the divine, especially during moments of stress, confusion, or forgetfulness. It serves as a constant companion, a background hum of awareness that supports the active work of compassion.
A Practical Path for mindfulness without buddhism: The Three Stages of Body Transformation
Vallalarβs teaching offers a clear progression where the physical body is not an obstacle to be overcome, but the very instrument of enlightenment. He documented a three-stage process of bodily purification that leads to a deathless state. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings.
Stage 1: Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)
This first stage begins with cleaning the physical vessel. The primary practice here is dietary, as laid out in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi. Vallalar taught that eating meat and other foods derived from harming animals introduces the vibrations of fear, pain, and death into the body. This makes higher states of consciousness impossible to sustain. The Suddha Deham is achieved by adopting a compassionate, plant-based diet, purifying the body of these gross influences and making it a receptive container for grace.
Through sustained practice of compassion (Jeeva Karunyam), mantra recitation, and a pure diet, the body begins to change its fundamental nature. This is the Pranava Deham. Accounts in the Thiru Arutpa describe this body as becoming increasingly subtle, light, and luminous. It becomes less dependent on physical food and sleep, drawing its energy more directly from the grace-light of Arut Perum Jyothi. The physical form becomes refined, resilient, and free from disease.
Stage 3: Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)
The final stage, the Gnana Deham, is the complete transformation of the physical body into a body of pure light. This is the state of physical immortality Vallalar himself demonstrated, according to witness accounts. In this stage, the body no longer obstructs light but becomes it, merging fully with the Vast Grace-Light. This process is sometimes compared to the Rainbow Body phenomenon documented in some Tibetan traditions, where a masterβs physical body dissolves into light upon death. Vallalarβs teaching, however, describes this as a conscious transformation achieved during life, culminating in the disappearance at Mettukuppam.
Begin with One Compassionate Meal Today
The path Vallalar described may seem vast, but it begins with a single, simple step. You can take it today.
Replace one animal-based meal with a plant-based option from Vallalarβs Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, or stem vegetables like drumstick (moringa) or brinjal (eggplant). Before you eat, take a moment to consider the absence of harm in your food. Notice the feeling of clarity that comes from a choice rooted in compassion. This is the start of the science.
