Vallalar taught that killing an animal for food brings suffering back to the one who caused it, through cause and effect, not as a punishment from God. He also taught that grace never closes: the day you choose compassion, the cycle begins to turn.
If you are asking this, something in you probably already feels the link between the suffering in the world and what lands on our plates. Vallalar called the remedy Jeeva Karunyam, compassion for every living being, and he placed its first step at the table.
In 1867 Vallalar opened a free kitchen in Vadalur, the Sathya Dharma Salai, which still feeds everyone who comes. Read more about him.
The Unseen Law: How Suffering Returns to Its Source
Vallalar taught that the consequences of our actions are not arbitrary punishments delivered by a distant God. Instead, they are natural and scientific results. When it comes to eating meat, he was unambiguous: the suffering we inflict on an animal does not end when its life does. The fear, pain, and violence of its death become embedded in its very cells.
When we consume that flesh, we are consuming the energy of that suffering. This creates a direct karmic consequence. It is not a matter of divine judgment but of cause and effect. The seed of violence, once planted in our own body, will eventually sprout as harm, disease, or mental anguish. The cycle of suffering that began with the animal returns to the one who caused it, continuing the chain of pain in the world.
For Meat Eating and Karma Explained, Vallalar Points to Compassion, Not Punishment
The most critical part of Vallalarβs teaching on this subject is not about the fear of karmic retribution. It is about the boundless and ever-present compassion of the divine, which he called Arut Perum JΕti, the Vast Grace-Light. He taught that even as we cause immense harm to other living beings, Godβs grace does not abandon us.
We are still given another day, another breath, another opportunity to choose differently. This is the measure of the grace-light available to every single soul. The karmic feedback we experienceβthe dis-ease and suffering that returns to usβis not a punishment. It is a form of divine instruction. It is a mirror showing us the pain we have caused so that we might finally awaken to compassion and stop creating it. The goal of karma is not to balance a cosmic ledger but to teach the soul the absolute necessity of kindness.
The Power of the Grace-Light Prayer
To connect with this source of divine compassion and begin to heal the karmic patterns we have created, Vallalar gave humanity a simple yet powerful tool: the Mahamantra. It is a prayer not of petition, but of alignment with the nature of grace itself.
The mantra is:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Reciting these words turns oneβs attention toward the very force of compassion that sustains life. It is a practice that slowly shifts the inner state away from one that participates in harm and toward one that reflects grace. It is a way to actively invite the divine light to dissolve the imprints of past actions and guide future ones toward kindness.
Jeeva Karunyam: The Foundation of a Clear Life
Vallalarβs entire spiritual science rests on one foundational practice: Jeeva Karunyam. This is not simply a passive feeling of pity but a disciplined, active compassion for all living beings (Jeevan). It is the conscious and deliberate choice to prevent or alleviate suffering wherever one encounters it.
The most basic and non-negotiable expression of Jeeva Karunyam, according to Vallalar, is to stop participating in the killing of animals for food. He saw a plant-based diet as the first and most essential step in living a spiritual life. Without this fundamental commitment to non-harming, he taught that no mantra, prayer, or meditation could take root. It is the act of compassion that clears the ground for grace to enter.
A person committed to this path might pause before a meal of rice and vegetables, consciously acknowledging that no life was taken for their nourishment. In that moment of quiet gratitude, they may notice a lightness, a sense of inner clarity that was absent before. This is the direct experience Vallalar pointed to.
One Action to Change the Karmic Cycle Today
You can begin to apply this teaching immediately, without changing anything on your plate. Before your next meal, take thirty seconds to silently acknowledge the life that was given for your food. Whether it is a plant or an animal, send a thought of peace and freedom from all suffering to that being. This simple act of awareness is the first step in practicing Jeeva Karunyam. It costs nothing and begins to shift your inner state from one of unconscious consumption to one of conscious compassion.
