The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is longevity spiritual practice. Perhaps youβve felt that there must be a deeper connection between spirit and body than modern life allows for. You will learn the three stages of physical transformation he documentedβSuddha Deham, Pranava Deham, and Gnana Dehamβand the specific practices he taught to achieve them. Much writing on spiritual longevity remains vague, speaking of energy or light without a clear method. Vallalar provided a science of the body, documented in his own life. To understand his claims, we must first look at the man himself.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught a path called Suddha Sanmarkkam, the βTrue Path,β centered on the worship of a formless divine grace-light he called Arut Perum Jyothi. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
The Foundation of a True Longevity Spiritual Practice: Jeeva Karunyam
For Vallalar, the path to physical transformation does not begin with breathing exercises, secret mantras, or complex rituals. It begins with a simple, non-negotiable principle: Jeeva Karunyam, or compassion for all living beings. This is not a passive feeling of goodwill. It is the active, moment-to-moment practice of preventing and alleviating the suffering of others, especially hunger.
Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. The primary expression of this is a plant-based diet. According to his teaching, the act of killing an animal for food introduces the energies of fear, pain, and death directly into the body. This creates a state of internal βheatβ and agitation that accelerates decay and blocks the flow of divine grace.
A body built from violence cannot become a vessel for light. Therefore, the first step in reversing the aging process is to stop participating in the cycle of causing death for sustenance. This act alone begins to cool the body and prepare it for a deeper change.
The Three Stages of Bodily Transformation
Vallalar documented a three-stage process where the physical body is progressively purified and transformed by the grace of Arut Perum Jyothi. This process is fueled by a life of Jeeva Karunyam, a plant-based diet, and the constant recitation of the Mahamantra.
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is the result of purifying the physical form through compassionate living and diet. Vallalar taught that as the body is cleansed of the imprints of violence and filled with compassion, it becomes more receptive to grace. It was during this stage that witnesses documented the reversal of his own aging. They recorded that his wrinkles vanished and his skin became youthful and renewed as his spiritual practice intensified. This body becomes free from disease, waste, and the normal processes of aging.
The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This body is composed not of gross matter but of pure sound and light. It is a subtler, more refined form that is not subject to physical laws like gravity or injury. Vallalar described it as a body of immense power and luminosity, visible to others but not made of flesh.
The final stage, which Vallalar alone is documented to have fully realized, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the individual form into the infinite bliss of the Vast Grace-Light, Arut Perum Jyothi. It is a formless, eternal state of being, a body made entirely of divine consciousness.
The Daily Practice That Fuels Transformation
The engine of this transformation is a life dedicated to compassion and the invocation of grace. Vallalar gave a Mahamantra, a great prayer, to call upon the divine light and compassion that makes this process possible. The daily, consistent recitation of this mantra is central to the path.
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
The translation is:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
This is not merely a string of words. Vallalar taught that its recitation, when combined with a life of active compassion, directly invites the restorative power of Arut Perum Jyothi into every cell of the body. It is the sound that realigns the physical self with its divine source, enabling the progression from Suddha Deham to the more advanced states.
Beyond Longevity: The Gnana Deham and the Rainbow Body
Vallalarβs ultimate state of the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body, represents a complete merger with the divine. While the goal of many spiritual paths is liberation of the soul from the body, Vallalarβs path involves the transformation of the body into a deathless vehicle of light.
This concept finds a distant parallel in the Dzogchen tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, which speaks of the βRainbow Body.β In this phenomenon, the physical body of a highly realized master is said to dissolve into light upon death, sometimes leaving behind only hair and nails.
While the phenomena share a surface resemblanceβthe transmutation of flesh into lightβVallalarβs teaching is distinct. The Gnana Deham is not a post-mortem event but a living transformation into a formless body of pure consciousness, a state he demonstrated through his final, documented disappearance.
Your First Step Toward a Compassionate Body
Today, consciously choose one meal to be entirely plant-based. As you eat, reflect on the life that was not taken for your nourishment. This is the first practical step in Jeeva Karunyam, the foundation of the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This simple act aligns you with the core principle that makes physical renewal possible.
