How to Receive Divine Grace: Vallalar’s Precise Answer

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to receive divine grace. This is a question that comes from a deep and honest place. Below, you will learn the one condition Vallalar gave for receiving grace and the three stages of bodily transformation that follow—the Suddha Deham, Pranava Deham, and Gnana Deham.

While many spiritual paths suggest prayer, devotion, or ritual as the primary means, Vallalar offered a single, non-negotiable key based on his direct experience. To understand its power, we need to look at the man who documented it.

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats—though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that has operated without interruption for over 150 years, running on donations alone. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again—his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

The One Condition for How to Receive Divine Grace

Many paths offer many methods for connecting with the divine: prayer, meditation, devotion, or complex rituals. Vallalar’s teaching on this subject is unique in its precision. In his text Jeevakarunyam Ozhukkam (The Discipline of Compassion), he stated that the only way to receive divine grace is to show compassion to all living beings.

This was not a philosophical idea to be debated. It was a direct instruction based on his own experience of what he called Arut Perum Jyothi, the vast grace-light. He taught that this divine light is not a distant force to be earned through worship. It is a living intelligence that responds to one specific quality in a human being: the active practice of compassion.

Prayer without compassion, in his view, is a request that cannot be heard. Ritual without compassion is an empty form. Devotion without compassion is a feeling that cannot open the final door. For Vallalar, compassion was the master key.

What is Jeeva Karunyam? The Practice of Active Compassion

Jeeva Karunyam is more than a feeling of sympathy. The term translates to “compassion for living beings,” but its practice is about action. It is the conscious, daily effort to prevent or alleviate the suffering of any life form, from humans to animals. The most fundamental expression of Jeeva Karunyam, according to Vallalar, is in what we eat.

He taught that eating meat creates and sustains suffering. The fear and pain an animal experiences at its death become part of the food itself, obstructing the body’s ability to receive and hold the subtle vibrations of grace. In his daily conduct manual, Nithya Karma Vidhi, he outlined a simple, plant-based diet free from anything that caused harm to other creatures.

This is not about moral purity. It is about practical spiritual science. Vallalar explained that a body built from compassionate choices becomes a fit vessel for grace. A body built from violence, however indirectly, cannot.

The Three Bodies of Grace: Suddha, Pranava, and Gnana Deham

When a person lives in a state of Jeeva Karunyam, divine grace begins to work directly on their physical form. Vallalar documented a three-stage transformation of the human body, a process he claimed was available to anyone who followed the path of compassion.

The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This body becomes immune to disease, decay, and the need for sleep. It is purified of all dense, karma-laden elements through a compassionate diet and the constant remembrance of grace.

The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This body becomes subtler, almost translucent, and is no longer subject to the laws of gravity or physical obstruction. It is a body made of light and sound, visible but not entirely solid.

The third and final stage, which Vallalar’s own life demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the physical form into the pure light of Arut Perum Jyothi. This state of physical immortality is sometimes compared to the “rainbow body” in Tibetan traditions, where a master’s body dissolves into light upon death. Vallalar’s teachings, however, describe this as a conscious, living transformation, not a post-mortem event.

Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam—active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. The central practice to accelerate this transformation is the recitation of the Mahamantra, an invocation of the grace-light itself:

Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Taṇi Perum Karuṇai — Aruṭ Perum Jōti

This translates to: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light. Reciting this mantra turns the mind and body toward the very force one wishes to receive.

Why Prayer and Ritual Alone Are Not Enough

Vallalar’s teaching does not dismiss prayer or devotion. Instead, it reframes them. He saw them as powerful tools for aligning one’s own consciousness, but he insisted they were incomplete without the foundational act of compassion.

Think of it this way: you can ask for light all day, but if the curtains are drawn, the room will remain dark. Jeeva Karunyam is the act of opening the curtains. It is the physical, real-world action that allows the light of grace, which is always present, to enter.

A person feeling disconnected and heavy might spend an hour in prayer with little result. Vallalar’s teaching suggests that taking five minutes of that time to put out water for birds or feed a stray animal would do more to open the heart to grace than the prayer alone. The outward act of care unties an inner knot.

This makes the path to grace accessible to everyone, regardless of their religious background or spiritual knowledge. It is not about what you believe; it is about how you treat the life around you.

Your First Step: A Meal of Compassion

You do not need to undertake complex practices to begin. The path Vallalar laid out starts with a single, simple choice.

Today, replace one animal-based meal with a plant-based option. Choose foods that Vallalar recommended in his Nithya Karma Vidhi for their purity and life-giving energy: rice, lentils, gourds, or stem vegetables. As you eat, consider that this meal was created without causing fear or pain to another living being. This is the first step in the science of compassion. It is the first action that invites grace.
