The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to live forever spiritually.
This search doesnβt come from idle curiosity. It comes from a place of deep pain, perhaps the fear of loss or the feeling that this life, in its current form, is not enough. You are looking for an anchor in a world that feels temporary. While many spiritual paths speak of an afterlife or a soul that survives the body, Vallalar offered something different: a documented science for making the physical body itself indestructible.
To understand this, we need to look at the man who claimed to have achieved it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. Vallalarβs central teaching was the Suddha Sanmarkkam, or the βTrue Path,β a universal spirituality based on compassion and the worship of the divine as a Vast Grace-Light.
On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Immortality Is Not a Metaphor
In most spiritual traditions, immortality refers to the soulβs survival after the body dies. The body is seen as a temporary vessel to be discarded. Vallalarβs teaching is radically different. For him, physical immortality was not a metaphor, a myth, or a distant aspiration β it was the explicit and documented destination of the path he laid out.
His six volumes of poetry, the Thiru Arutpa, are not just devotional hymns. They are a step-by-step manual for the total transformation of the physical body from gross matter into an indestructible body of grace-light. He taught that death, disease, and decay are not natural laws but errors that can be corrected through a specific spiritual science.
The Foundation: How Compassion Builds an Indestructible Body
Before any technique or mantra, Vallalar placed a single, non-negotiable foundation: Jeeva Karunyam. This is not just a feeling of pity but active, relentless compassion that seeks to prevent and alleviate the suffering of all living beings.
Vallalar taught that none of the advanced techniques for bodily transformation can take root without Jeeva Karunyam. He explained that the fear, pain, and suffering of other creaturesβespecially those killed for foodβcreate a dense, heavy quality within our own physical cells. This density blocks the flow of Arut Perum JΕti, the divine grace-light that is essential for purifying and transforming the body.
He taught that the simple act of feeding a hungry person, without any expectation of reward, does more to purify the body than hours of meditation in isolation. It is the outward expression of compassion that opens the inward channels for grace.
The Three-Stage Path for How to Live Forever Spiritually
Vallalar documented a precise, three-stage process for transmuting the physical body into an eternal form. This is not an overnight event but a gradual evolution fueled by compassion, a pure diet, and devotion.
Stage 1: Suddha Deham β The Pure Body
The first stage is the purification of the physical form. This begins by removing everything that introduces density and suffering into the body. Vallalarβs text, the Nithya Karma Vidhi, gives specific guidelines: a strict plant-based diet, avoiding meat, fish, eggs, and even certain stimulating vegetables. The goal is to make the body as light and pure as possible, free from the vibrations of violence and pain.
Alongside diet, the central practice is the constant recitation of the Mahamantra, a call for the grace-light to descend:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
As the body is purified through compassionate action, pure food, and the mantra, it becomes the Suddha Deham. It is free from disease, its aging process slows dramatically, and it begins to radiate a subtle, visible light.
As the Suddha Deham becomes increasingly saturated with grace-light, it begins its transformation into the Pranava Deham. This is a body made not of gross matter but of a primal, subtle substance akin to light and sound.
At this stage, the body no longer depends on physical food or water for sustenance. It is nourished directly by the divine grace-light. It becomes impervious to fire, water, weapons, or any form of physical harm. It is a golden, luminous form that can appear and disappear at will. This is an extremely advanced state, the result of perfected compassion and unwavering devotion.
Stage 3: Gnana Deham β The Wisdom Body
The final stage is the complete merging of the individual form with the universal Vast Grace-Light. This is the state Vallalar is documented to have achieved. The Gnana Deham is a body of pure wisdom and light, no longer bound by any form. It is a complete dissolution into the divine, achieving a deathless, omnipresent existence.
While some other traditions, like the Tibetan concept of the rainbow body, hint at a similar outcome, Vallalarβs account is distinct in its scientific precision and its claim to be a repeatable path. He presented it not as a miracle for a chosen few, but as the natural, evolutionary destiny for all who practice the Suddha Sanmarkkam.
A Practical First Step Today
The path to a deathless body does not begin with complex rituals but with a simple, conscious choice. Before you do anything else today, perform one small act of Jeeva Karunyam.
Put out a bowl of fresh water for birds. Feed a stray animal. Donate a single meal to a food bank online. Vallalar taught that the entire cosmic science of immortality is unlocked by the key of compassion. Start there.
