The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to heal hurt feelings.
Emotional pain can feel like a silent, heavy room that no one else can enter. It is among the most isolating experiences a person can have, and no amount of good advice makes the weight any lighter in the acute moment. I know how much courage it takes to even look for an answer when you feel this way. Vallalarβs teaching begins not with explanation but with a practical, steadying path for times just like this. Much writing about emotional healing stays at the level of concept, but Vallalar offered a series of actions that do not require you to understand your pain first.
To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who offered this path.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβthough he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. Vallalarβs central teaching was the worship of the divine as Arut Perum Jothi, the Vast Grace-Light, accessible to all through compassion and service.
On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
An Anchor for the Mind in Chaos
When the mind is overwhelmed by grief or hurt, it replays the same thoughts in a painful loop. Vallalar taught that trying to argue with these thoughts or understand them in the moment is often impossible. Instead, he offered a tool to give the mind something else to hold onto: the Maha-mantra.
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
The translation is: βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β
This is not a prayer asking for something. It is a statement of what is real, a sound that anchors your attention outside the storm of your own emotions. Reciting it, even silently, gives the mind a different rhythm to follow. It is the first practical step away from the isolating feeling of pain and a gentle turning toward a reality of grace and compassion.
How to Heal Hurt Feelings by Changing Your Plate
Vallalarβs path to healing was intensely practical, extending even to the food one eats. He taught that the fear, pain, and suffering of an animal at the moment of its death become part of the food itself. To consume it is to consume that suffering, adding another layer of agitation and heaviness to an already burdened system.
This is why a clean diet is a core part of his teaching on emotional well-being. By choosing plant-based foods, you actively refuse to participate in the suffering of other beings. This is not just a moral choice; Vallalar described it as a scientific one. You stop introducing external agitation into your body, which creates a calmer inner environment where healing can begin. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. Choosing a plant-based meal is a direct and simple act of Jeeva Karunyam.
The Counter-Intuitive Path: Healing Through Service
When you are in pain, the natural instinct is to withdraw and focus inward. Vallalar taught the opposite. He showed that one of the most effective ways to ease your own suffering is to ease the suffering of another. This does not have to be a grand gesture. It is about seeing a need and meeting it, however small.
The act of compassionate service breaks the spell of self-obsession that pain creates. When you focus on feeding a hungry person or offering a kind word to someone in distress, your own pain, for a moment, is no longer the center of your world. It moves you from a state of helpless isolation into one of active connection.
You might buy a warm meal for a homeless person on your way home, focusing entirely on their relief and comfort for those few minutes. In that simple, outward act, the tight grip of your own hurt loosens, even if just for a short while. Vallalar taught that these small acts of compassion accumulate, gradually replacing the inner landscape of pain with one of grace.
One Grounding Action to Take Today
You do not need to feel better before you can begin. The path starts with one small, outward action. Before you do anything else today, take five minutes to practice what Vallalar taught.
Sit quietly and recite the Maha-mantra, βAruαΉ Perum JΕti, AruαΉ Perum JΕti, TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai, AruαΉ Perum JΕti.β As you do, hold in your mind the image of someone you know who is also in pain. Offer the peace of this mantra to them. This act combines the anchor of the mantra with the outward focus of compassionate service, creating a powerful first step toward your own healing.
