The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to heal from painful emotions.
Emotional pain and grief are among the most isolating experiences a person can have. It is a weight no one else can see or lift, and no amount of good advice makes it lighter in the acute moment. This is a real state, not a problem to be solved with a simple answer. Much writing on healing stays at the level of theory. Vallalar offered a path that begins not with understanding, but with a single, concrete action. To understand why his approach is so direct, we need to look at the man who documented it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
An Anchor for the Mind in Chaos
When the mind is caught in a storm of grief or pain, thinking your way out is often impossible. The thoughts themselves become part of the storm. Vallalarβs practical teaching begins here, not with an explanation to analyze, but with an anchor to hold.
He offered the Maha-mantra, or Great Mantra, as a stable point of focus when everything else feels like chaos. The practice is to simply recite the sound, allowing it to occupy the mind.
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
The translation is: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
The purpose is not to fight the pain or force it away. It is to give the mind a place to rest. By focusing on this sound, you create a small island of stability. The waves of emotion may still crash, but you have a place to stand that is not the waves themselves.
How to Heal From Painful Emotions Without Fighting Them
Vallalarβs method for healing turns conventional wisdom on its head. Instead of going deeper into the self to analyze the pain, he taught a path of turning attention outward. This begins with two foundational practices: a compassionate diet and compassionate action.
He called the central principle Jeeva Karunyam β compassion for all living beings. He taught that the food we eat directly impacts our emotional and physical state. When we consume animals, we also consume the fear and pain they experienced at the time of their death. This adds a subtle but constant layer of agitation and suffering to our own system.
By choosing a clean, plant-based diet, we stop ingesting this suffering. This is not about moral superiority, but about practical science. A body free from the suffering of other beings has a greater capacity for peace and clarity. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings.
The Science of Compassion in Action
The second part of Jeeva Karunyam is active service. Vallalar taught that one of the most effective ways to heal oneβs own pain is to relieve the pain of another. This practice directly counters the isolating nature of grief.
When you are in deep emotional pain, the world can shrink to the size of your own suffering. The mind runs in a loop, replaying the hurt. Compassionate service breaks this loop by presenting the mind with a new, external focus: the need of another being.
This can be as simple as feeding a stray animal or ensuring a neighbor has enough to eat. In that moment of service, the self-referential loop of grief is momentarily broken. The focus shifts from βmy painβ to βtheir need.β Vallalar established a perpetually burning stove in Vadalur to ensure no one ever went hungry, a physical testament to this principle.
The Body Itself as the Field of Healing
For Vallalar, these practices were not just for mental relief. They were the scientific steps for a total transformation of the physical body, which is the ultimate form of healing. He documented three stages of this process.
The first stage, Suddha Deham (Pure Body), is achieved through a life of Jeeva Karunyam. The body becomes physically purified, free from the gross impurities generated by causing and consuming suffering.
The second stage is the Pranava Deham (Primal Body). As the practice of reciting the Maha-mantra deepens, the physical body becomes subtler and less dense, filled with the divine grace-light, or Arut Perum JΕti.
The final stage is the Gnana Deham (Wisdom Body), a body made of pure light. The accounts of those who knew Vallalar suggest he achieved this state. This transformation is sometimes compared to the βrainbow bodyβ of Tibetan traditions, though the scientific process Vallalar described in his Nithya Karma Vidhi is distinct. This shows that healing from pain was, for him, the first step toward a complete renewal of the human form itself.
One Simple Act to Begin Today
You do not need to understand the entire path to take the first step. Vallalarβs method is practical and immediate.
Spend five minutes reciting the Mahamantra for someone you know who is in pain. Do it before you do anything else today. This single act combines the anchor of the mantra with the outward focus of compassion. It is a small, concrete start on the path he laid out, a way to bring light to another even when you feel surrounded by darkness.
