How To Heal From Emotional Wounds: Vallalar’s Path

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to heal from emotional wounds.

Emotional pain and grief are among the most isolating experiences a person can have. It is a weight no one else can see or carry for you, and no amount of good advice makes it lighter in the acute moment. When you are in that place, you don’t need another theory; you need a place to stand. Vallalar’s practical teaching begins not with explanation but with an anchor for the mind when everything else is chaos.

To understand why his approach works, we first need to look at the man who documented it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that has operated without interruption for over 150 years, serving food to anyone regardless of background.

On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

The First Anchor in a Storm: The Maha-mantra

When the mind is overwhelmed by grief or emotional pain, thinking your way out is impossible. The mind is the storm. Vallalar taught that the first step is not to fight the storm but to find an anchor. For this, he gave the Maha-mantra.

It is not a prayer that asks for anything. It is a statement of what is real, a sound that gives the mind a solid place to rest when feelings are chaotic. The practice is to recite it, silently or aloud, and let its vibration occupy the space that pain has claimed.

The mantra is:
AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€”
TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

Repeating this sound pulls your attention from the churning thoughts and emotions to a single, stable point. It does not erase the pain, but it stops the pain from being the only thing that exists.

How to Heal From Emotional Wounds by Easing Another’s Pain

The most counter-intuitive part of Vallalar’s teaching on suffering is his insistence on turning outward. When we are in pain, the natural instinct is to turn inward, to focus on the wound. Vallalar taught that this focus is what keeps the wound from healing.

He called the foundational practice Jeeva Karunyam β€” active compassion toward all living beings. This is not a vague feeling of goodwill. It is the concrete act of easing the suffering of another being. The logic is simple and scientific: you cannot remain trapped in your own pain while actively relieving someone else’s.

Find one hungry being β€” a person on the street, a stray dog, a bird in your yard β€” and feed them. In that moment of giving, your attention is not on your own grief but on their need. Vallalar taught that this small shift is enough to create an opening for grace to enter. It breaks the isolating spell of personal suffering.

A Diet That Lifts the Weight of Suffering

Vallalar connected our inner state directly to what we consume. He taught that the body is a sensitive instrument, and it registers everything we put into it. His dietary rules, outlined in texts like the Nithya Karma Vidhi, were designed to create a body that is light, clear, and free from agitation.

Central to this was the complete avoidance of meat. Vallalar taught that when an animal is killed, its fear and pain are imprinted on its flesh. Consuming that flesh introduces the vibration of suffering directly into your own body. For someone already struggling with emotional wounds, this adds a heavy, unseen burden.

Choosing a clean, plant-based diet is a direct act of Jeeva Karunyam. It prevents suffering for other beings while simultaneously clearing your own system of the dense energies of fear and violence. This isn’t about morality; it is about practical physics. To heal, you must stop taking in the very thing you are trying to heal from.

Your First Step Today: An Act of Outward Attention

You do not need to understand this entire path to begin. Vallalar’s method starts with one small, concrete action that you can take right now, before you do anything else.

Spend five minutes reciting the Maha-mantra. But do not do it for yourself. Bring to mind one person you know who is also in pain. It could be a friend, a family member, or a stranger you saw today. Direct the feeling and sound of the mantra toward them, for their relief.

This single act combines the core of the teaching: it uses the mantra as an anchor and applies Jeeva Karunyam by turning your focus from your own pain to the well-being of another. It is the first step out of the isolation of grief and into the shared space of compassion where healing becomes possible.
